Research topics and open action items - general discussion

<scribe> scribe: janina

[We all just introduced ourselves to Donal, our new member]

<jasonjgw> Janina: responded to Scott's post to the list and suggested some terms that might be relevant in the search for music-related references.

<jasonjgw> Janina: introducing the background to this current work - the APA Working Group has recognized recent activities that have taken place in improving the accessible representation of mathematics on the web.

<jasonjgw> Janina: other domains are likely to arise for consideration as well - chemistry, economics, music and others. There is a need for specialized expertise in each knowledge domain to design the accessible interfaces - gneeral assistive technology developers are unlikely to possess this expertise in each domain.

<jasonjgw> Janina notes the need to determine whether there is a consistent approach that can be taken in all of the knowledge domains (e.g., for the interpretation and accessible presentation of domain-specific markup).

<jasonjgw> We need a sense of what the needs are, what has been achieved so far, and what approaches can be taken.

sh: I've been looking mostly past 5 years, but happy to look at anything older that you know of

<jasonjgw> Janina: we wish to identify any specific type of widget for which we need better support than is currently available in ARIA.

<jasonjgw> Identifying these in research would be valuable.

<jasonjgw> Janina notes that mathematics accessibility is a very active topic at the moment - including MathML-based approaches and alternatives thereto.

<jasonjgw> Janina notes current W3C work on music markup and the role of DAISY/digital publishing specialists in investigating potential accessibility support (e.g., braille translation).

jgw: We'll need to look broadly through the literature
... identifying software is good, but not always linked to research
... We're interested in potential solutions to support AT, with knowledge domain markup to be presented accessibly
... We're also noting challenge of manipulating and interacting with this content
... We're compiling references at the moment
... Will then read and create a synopsis
... Notes that David has done some more work on the APA Verticals wiki
... And there's still Captcha in progress
