<liam> Jason - privacy at apple, & hence advertising

<liam> Katy - dir client engineering for digital content, bg is adtech heavy

<liam> JP Abello, formerly at Nielsen, helped launch the group

<liam> Phil Archer, GS1 - the barcode people, a membership organization

<liam> product data carried in or accessible from ads, prod identification

liam: Has had some difficulty in making advertising interesting to W3C
... now succeeding#
... GDPR is causing some disquiet in the community
... Verifiable Claims ties into that

<liam> phila - VC - gluten free, etc, product data

<jnovak> I thought that Verifiable Claims was going to be around things like verifying that the ad was shown to someone who matched the targeting demographics

<jnovak> Or on the other side that an ad that was delviered to a browser was shown to a user

<liam> JP - verifiable identity for the advertiser

<liam> i.e. knowing who the advertiser is

<liam> liam: relates to ads.txt from IAB (fraudulent ads)

liam: I started to make a use cases page https://www.w3.org/community/web-adv/use-cases/
... I propose that we go through the use cases on the mailing list and see if people agree that they are UCs and add to them
... on the public list that helps attract attention
... they're my interpretation of what others have told us.
... Are there areas where we could change the web easily?

<liam> phila: how do you put ads in front of people that aren't irritating, in a world with ad blockers

<liam> JP - make sure ad hasn't been tampered with

<liam> jnovak, agree re. right ads to right people, but was also have to think about the data & data collection side

<liam> phila: clarifying the charter will help getting users

<Zakim> phila, you wanted to talk about DPub https://www.w3.org/dpub/IG/wiki/Requirements_for_Web_Publication_and_Packaging

<jnovak> -queue

<liam> integrity of ad arriving - digital publishing WG, solving business of packaging

<liam> maybe we can use their solution

<liam> liam: an approach is to send people to their WG to ask them if their interested in what we need

<liam> phila will contact ivan and ask about packaging & integrity, and including ads

liam: The BBC funds its progs outside the UK, it has a requirement that all its pages are accessible. It uses Google AdSense as far as I can see. No guarantee that ads are accessible
... get to see pictures of words which is not good.
... may need to work with a11y group on that.
... And IAB publishes open bid protocol...
... Maybe others can look at the UCs

Possible workshops

liam: Probably need to get further down the road

Charter

liam: Need to work on that

JP_Abello: What's your thinking on a workshop? At NAB or somewhere else?

liam: That's next month and W3C process says we need at least 12 weeks' notice
... Ideally, internally, we need to talk to BizDev
... and other participants here

JP_Abello: Nielsen hosted something before. Maybe Katey could check if that could be repeated.

liam: No to Tampa in August

JP_Abello: April.May is still nice

liam: If we do a workshop, I'm thinking September
... It'll depend on who we have in the BG?

phila: TPAC?

JP_Abello: Maybe at an advertising conference?

liam: Ideas would be welcome
... I realise before we adjourn we need to organise the next meeting
... I am away on 5 April

JP_Abello: What about the VC group. Are they doing a WS? Can we combine with them?

liam: They're doing sth at the identity workshop, first week of April
... And credentials people - almost the same
... Maybe IAB

JP_Abello: I like not doing it in isolation

liam: Keen to avoid perception of US-only bias
... I will send mail for the meeting in 2 weeks' time.

JP_Abello: I think we should ask Brendan for his availability

liam: I can't be here in 2 weeks but will send details properly
