This interoperability event has been postponed to 2012. This page will be updated once new date and location are known. Please get in touch with Dominique Hazaël-Massieux <dom@w3.org> if you're interested.
6-7 December 2011
Postponed (to be announced)
Hosted by ETSI
Join us!
- Are you concerned about mobile fragmentation?
- Do you have a mobile Web application that needs testing on a real device?
This two-day event will be the occasion to develop test cases to improve the interoperability of the Mobile Web Application Platform and to run test plans and test Web applications on various mobile devices.
Call For Participation
Who should participate
The event is aimed at companies and organizations directly or indirectly interested in ensuring the interoperability of the Open Web platform across devices and browsers, in particular on mobile devices. You should consider participating in this event if you are (non exhaustive list):
- Browser makers willing to provide the best possible user experience;
- Operators wishing to provide a development platform that works consistently across a deployed set of devices;
- Web application developers concerned about mobile fragmentation;
- Mobile Web application developer looking to test their applications on physical devices;
- Device manufacturers seeking to integrate an application runtime environment based on Web technologies;
- Company/organizations that develops certification programs around Web technologies;
- Web-based companies willing to extend their audience.
Background
With the Open Web Platform becoming ever more powerful, the number of Web technologies implemented in a Web browser has grown from a handful of specifications to more than a hundred. The list includes
- HTML5
- CSS specifications
- SVG
- Web Fonts
- A growing list of APIs (Geolocation, IndexedDB, Web Sockets, for instance).
The Standards for Web Applications on Mobile roadmap details the current state and roadmap of the set of technologies that are particularly relevant on mobile devices.
As the number of technologies increases and as new mobile devices get produced, the demand for interoperability between Web technologies is key to the long-term success of the Open Web Platform.
For years, W3C Working Groups have been testing standards-to-be following their own methods with little to no coordination between groups. However, technologies like HTML, CSS and APIs need to be tested in the same user agents, often in combination. To improve coordination, the W3C has announced the creation of a generic Web testing activity which is set up to
- develop a common testing framework that can be used across working groups
- propose guidelines to create testable specifications and test suites
- coordinate test suite developments.
Goals and Scope
This interoperability event, organized by W3C through the MobiWebApp project and MOSQUITO project partners, will be the occasion:
- to practice and develop test cases for the new testing framework
- to test Web applications on a wide variety of devices through various network configurations.
Web technologies under consideration for the development of test cases are those directly relevant to the development of mobile Web applications, as identified in the Standards for Web Applications on Mobile page.
A particular focus will be technologies that meet the following criteria:
- The specification is relatively stable (published as Last Call Working Draft or Candidate Recommendation)
- There are no comprehensive test suite available (or the test suite would benefit from adaptation to the new format)
- There exists at least one running prototype on a mobile device
Candidate specifications/features include:
- The
video
element in HTML5 - The
audio
element in HTML5 - New form input types in HTML5 (date, time, etc.)
- HTML5 Application Cache
- Device Orientation Event Specification
- Contacts API
- Battery Status API
- Web Storage
- Web Workers
Throughout the event, various mobile devices will be available to run test cases and check Web applications.
Participation Requirements
The event is open to everyone. Registration is free but mandatory.
Contribution Policy
All participants need to agree with the Policies for Contribution of Test Cases to W3C license under which tests will be contributed.
Dates and venue
Event postponed:
Dates and venue will be communicated when known.
