ISSUE-105: Should the capture hint in HTML Media Capture be specified through a MIME parameter?
captureHint
Should the capture hint in HTML Media Capture be specified through a MIME parameter?
- State:
- CLOSED
- Product:
- Capture API
- Raised by:
- Dominique Hazaël-Massieux
- Opened on:
- 2010-11-18
- Description:
- As of November 2010, the HTML Media Capture spec uses a parameter in the description of the MIME type of the accept attribute:
http://dev.w3.org/2009/dap/camera/#captureparam
It's been argued that this is a hack, and might be fragile
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-device-apis/2010Nov/0056.html
An alternative that was suggested early on was to use an additional attribute in the <input> element.
Android currently ships with the MIME parameter. - Related Actions Items:

re Android implementation:
"We did think about adding an attribute but considered that the source
param is nicer because of the same reason as the one Arun mentioned."
Arun's reasons being "Minimizing attributes is nice; I don't think this is overloading. Rather, by including @accept in the first place, we may have all that we need."
(but Arun later took the view that this parameter wasn't perhaps not necessary)
Latest suggestion: use the role attribute to indicate the intent of getting media from capture device rather than filesystem.
