SKOS Simple Knowledge Organization System Reference Errata

About this document

This document lists known errata to the Recommendation. Each entry has the following information:

1. A unique identifier
2. The date it was added to the errata page
3. A classification of the error (e.g., editorial, clarification, bug, known problem with the document itself)
4. A short description of the problem and what part of the Recommendation is affected.
5. Any proposed corrections and whether those corrections would affect conformance of documents or software
6. Any normative corrections; see the section on Errata Management in the W3C Process Document ([PROCESS] section 7.6.1) for more information about normative corrections

Errata for SKOS Reference

• [SKOS-DL-versionIRI] (10 Feb 2011)

  It was argued that because the formal representation of the "OWL DL prune" of SKOS had no version IRI, it was (fixably) breaking a rule specified in the 2009 OWL2 recommendation, that "If an ontology has an ontology IRI but no version IRI, then a different ontology with the same ontology IRI but no version IRI SHOULD NOT exist". The following was resolved:

  This resolution represents a clarification of a non-normative part of the SKOS Reference recommendation. The resolved change will positively enhance the usability of the OWL DL representation of SKOS without negatively affecting the conformance of documents or software.

• [DCT-abbrev] (12 Mar 2011)

  Table 1 does not state that dct: is used as an abbreviation for http://purl.org/dc/terms/ . Cf. Re: best practice property to use for naming a skos:ConceptScheme .

• [HTML-namespace] (2 Aug 2011)

  The 2009 version of the SKOS HTML Namespace document contained wrong links. A new HTML Namespace document has been set up, which is accessible from http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/core.html. Appendix C.1 of the SKOS Reference document should indicate that the latest version of the HTML Variant of the SKOS Namespace Document can be accessed directly via http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/core.html, NOT via http://www.w3.org/TR/skos-reference/skos.html. The [SKOS-HTML] reference of the SKOS Reference document should now read:

• [S14] (2 Aug 2011)

  Readers have commented that the formulation of S14, "A resource has no more than one value of skos:prefLabel per language tag", may leave room for unintended interpretations. S14 should be understood as the following:

  "A resource has no more than one value of skos:prefLabel per language tag, and no more than one value of skos:prefLabel without language tag." .

  The SKOS RDF Namespace Document and its OWL1-DL version have been updated accordingly.

  As per this email to the SKOS list: Exemple 77 uses "love"@fr while it should be "amour"@fr.

• [skos-vs-skos-xl] (31 July 2013)

  As per this email to the SKOS list: Section C5 states: "This RDF schema document expresses the SKOS vocabulary" while it should state: "This RDF schema document expresses the SKOS-XL vocabulary".

• [xl-integrity-constraints] (31 July 2013)

  As per this email to the SKOS list S48 and S58 should belong to a separate "integrity condition" section like the owl:disjointWith statements in the Reference.

Errata for SKOS Primer

• [ISO-Correspondences] (13 Dec 2012)

  The 2009 version of the SKOS Primer includes a correspondence table between SKOS and the ISO-2788/5964 thesaurus standards: http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/NOTE-skos-primer-20090818/#seccorrespondencesISO. This table is made obsolete by the publication of a new thesaurus data model in ISO 25964. Readers of the SKOS Primer can find an updated table, "Correspondence between ISO 25964 and SKOS/SKOS-XL models", at http://www.niso.org/schemas/iso25964/correspondencesSKOS/ which can be located from http://www.niso.org/schemas/iso25964/.

• [SPARQL-variable-typo] (8 March 2015)

  As per this email to the SKOS list: The first line in the last example in section 5.3, "SELECT ?x ?", should be "SELECT ?x ?y".

Errata for the SKOS RDF Namespace Document and its OWL1-DL version

• [narrower-scopeNote] (31 July 2013)

  A comment on the SKOS mailing list remarked that in the SKOS RDF files, skos:narrower mistakenly has the same skos:scopeNote as skos:broader. The correct versions should state:

             <skos:scopeNote xml:lang="en">By convention, skos:narrower is only used 
             to assert an immediate (i.e. direct) hierarchical link between two
             conceptual resources.</skos:scopeNote>
          

• [missing-tags] (31 July 2013)

  Two emails (1, 2) noted that in the SKOS RDF files, the skos:definition for skos:broaderTransitive and skos:narrowerTransitive do not have a language tag. The correct versions should state:
