Decision Meeting #3 Goal & Agenda

Background

The dial-in information for this week's meeting is here. The Decision Incubator Activity is designed to enable both discussion and action. The online discussion will occur using primarily the wiki to explore aspects of standardizing Decisions & Decision-Making. The action will involve the development of a Decision Representation format (e.g. in XML, RDF, OWL…) available on the wiki along with its use by participants in testbed settings for experiments and exercises. The rapid development and iterative evolution of a Decision representation will allow significant feedback from potential users to assist the broader discussion and will ensure that a useful, although perhaps incomplete, product will always be available. Each meeting will be an opportunity to summarize progress & contributions to the wiki, review next steps and action items, and to review the current representation format.

Action Items from the First Meeting

Review Eva's contributions to the wiki on the tools and tutorials. There you will find information for downloading the Neon Toolkit, installing the specified plugins, and exploring the examples and paper explaining eXtreme Design using Content Ontology Design Patterns. These tools and the eXtreme Design (XD) approach will be useful for developing an ontology for representing decisions.

Goal for this Meeting

At this third meeting of the Decision Incubator, the goal is to learn from our colleagues, Udi h Bauman and Ekkli representatives, about their experiences helping companies to improve their collaborative discussions and decision-making. Their experience can help guide the members' thinking and decision format considerations. The meeting will also cover recent experience using the Neon Toolkit and plugins for the Information Flow Use Case, a brief mention of guiding principles, and a discussion leading to the development of an Open Linked Data Use Case.

Agenda

(1) Presentation by Udi h Bauman on Experience and Lessons Learned with Decision Support

We are fortunate to have Udi h Bauman and his colleagues from Ekkli joining us for this meeting. Udi and friends have significant experience helping companies learn to make more effective, collaborative discussions and decisions. Udi will discuss their experience and lessons learned, which will be a significant contribution to the combined knowledge of the Incubator members. (25 minutes plus another 10 minutes for discussion)

(2) Initial Examples Using Neon Toolkit

At our last meeting, Eva presented her wonderful contributions to the wiki, including the overview of eXtreme Design (XD), the XD toolkit and some samples for how to apply the XD approach utilizing Content Ontology Design Patterns (CPs). Jeff explored using the toolkit and the XD approach to model the Measuring Information Flow Use Case utilizing the Transition Content Ontology Design pattern. Jeff will review his progress in this area. A useful schedule would be to pair-design the decision components for the next few weeks and report the results and progress on the wiki. (10 minutes)

(3) Principles of Web Architecture/Information Sharing

Jeff will quickly review a few example guidelines/principles that may underly the ideal decision representation format. These may be considered design requirements or design goals, as developed and approved by the Incubator members. For example, the overriding need for simplicity to enable scalability, understandability, adoption and robustness. Reusing simple connectable, modular components can enable both simplicity at the micro-level but allow for needed sophistication and manageable complexity at the macro-level. (5 minutes)

(4) Use of An Open Linked Data Scenario

At the last meeting, the participants briefly discussed the significance of the open linked data initiatives. Participants will continue this discussion briefly to discuss more specifically how to leverage linked open data in the decision format. In particular, some current open linked data will be considered for a special Use Case, where the capability to utilize the data as both the options and the criteria for a sample decision will be considered. This Open Linked Data Use Case will then be fleshed out and modeled for the following meeting. The underlying proposition is that an excellent use of linked open data is to support decision-making. The discussion will consider how best to integrate and utilize linked data for serving as the subject, the context, and the environment for decision-making. (10 minutes)
