Decision Meeting #17 Goal & Agenda

Background

The dial-in information for this week's meeting is here. The Decision Incubator Activity is intended to explore the use cases and design of a Decision Representation format (e.g. in XML, RDF, OWL…) available on the wiki along with its use by participants in testbed settings for experiments and exercises. Each meeting will be an opportunity to summarize progress & contributions to the wiki, review next steps and action items, and to review the current representation format.

Summary from the Last Meeting

At the last meeting #16 (see minutes), we were fortunate to have invited participants from 3 Sigma Research educate us on their current work to manage security using ontologies. Jim Dike, Aaron Wheeler and Michael Winburn joined us and discussed how ontological representation and reasoning can enable automatic sanitizing of sensitive documents so that those with different access restrictions can still receive the data items that are appropriate for them from within the otherwise inaccessible document. For more info, see the minutes and the very nice paper at http://www.ucmss.com/cr/main/papersNew/papersAll/ICA7015.pdf. This work is important for decision-making because, in addition to traditional security classifications, there are many policy-oriented rules about disclosure that exist in domains like emergency management. It is expected that the ability to represent different levels of access will be a requirement for a decision format that will work effectively in these domains. We spent an enjoyable hour discussing the aspects of representing security and the possibility of sharing some of this work in a way that would allow us to leverage the knowledge for our decision-making effort. The folks from 3 Sigma Research will be invited experts to our incubator and they will consider the potential for collaboration and we can revisit this at future meetings.

Goal for this Meeting

At this seventeenth meeting of the Decision Incubator, we will receive an overview from Jeff on his latest updates to the Common Decision Exchange Protocol (CDEP), an XML-based format for representing decisions. This work may help to suggest some potential requirements for a more semantic-based representation of decisions. We also will get updates from other participants, as they are available, on their current activities including Eva (if she is able to join us from Shanghai). Eva presented our work in a poster session and participated in the 2010 Workshop on Ontology Patterns last Monday. Also we will visit with Piotr Nowara to learn about any updates in his modeling efforts. Don McGarry can update us on his latest activities with situation reporting for emergency management and potential applications for decision-making. We will also chat with our colleagues from 3 Sigma Research.

Agenda

The following agenda items will be discussed at the next meeting. The topic, time, summary and discussion leader are provided for each agenda item.

(0) Introductions & Agenda Overview (5 min, Jeff)

We'll briefly consider the current status and agenda items for any suggested changes.

(1) Update from ISWC 2010 (15 min Eva)

If she is available at the late hour in Shanghai, we will see if we can get an update from Eva on the 2010 Workshop on Ontology Patterns and other activities at ISWC 2010.

(2) Common Decision Exchange Protocol (CDEP) Update (15 min Jeff)

Jeff will discuss some recent modifications to this XML format for decision-making and how it may help as a stepping stone to improved semantic models. See CDEP Examples.

(3) Around the Horn (20 min All)

We'll see if we can visit with each of our participants to get an update on latest activities in representing or modeling decisions, security, situation reporting or other areas relevant for decision-making.
