ISSUE-42: Keyboard as a basic modality

Keyboard as a basic modality

State:
CLOSED
Product:
Authoring
Raised by:
Deborah Dahl
Opened on:

Description:
This follows on from a discussion during the September 17 call with people from the WAI-PF WG.
For accessibility, all MMI applications should support a command-line interpreter modality in the sense that all state transition paths are followable from the command-line interface. Text is the most universal format. Similarly, the keyboard is the lingua franca for alternate input,
all kinds of special drivers know how to emulate the keyboard

We need to schedule time for discussion in the group. At first you might think that this is an authoring issue, and the most that the architecture document should say is that every application should support keyboard input. However, I think the WAI-PF (accessibility) group actually wanted something more like "every application must transparently (to the author) support keyboard input for every modality". I don't see how that would be possible/practical for every modality (e.g. ink capture), but in some cases (speech recognition, for example)it would make sense and we should discuss it.

[ddahl]: this has more to do with application authoring and we should take it up if we provide authoring guidelines

[kaz]: keyboard modality should consider the relationship with IME

we defer this to the Authoring group
