Escaping used to represent:

• Syntax-significant characters (i.e. & for '&')
• Characters that cannot be represented in some encoding

HTML/XML:

Numeric character references (NCRs): "é" = "é"
Predefined entities (HTML only): "é" = "é"

CSS:

"\E9 " or "\0000E9" = "é"
