Simple Interaction Example
In our tests, for our (somewhat bogus) test page, HTTP/1.1, for the same content:
Reduced the number of packets by 2x-10x; doubled the mean packet size
Reduced the number of TCP connections from 4 to 1 (HTTP/1.0 w. "keep-alive") or 43 to 1 (w.o. "keep-alive)
Reduced the number of system calls by more than a factor of two
But: still transferred almost as many bytes (since the same content was transferred)
speed on dialup improved only slightly for initial page downloads (~15-20%)
for revalidation, speed up was almost a factor of 2 (a more compact protocol could be 5X faster!)
