Adding style to structured documents has been a difficult issue since the concept of structured documents has developed. In the early versions of HTML, style information has been intermingled with document structure. It was made possible only recently to separate style from HTML pages with the advent of CSS. Then, other directions have been proposed, namely XSL, for handling style in complex XML documents on the Web.
The Spice submission is still another way to consider style for structured documents on the Web.
The W3C staff have reviewed the submission and identified relationship to the Style sheets activity, more specifically to both working groups in this area:
The submission is also related to some extent to the Document Object Model, but this activity does not currently consider rendering objects (aka flow objects).
Next Steps: The relevant working groups will be invited to consider whether the submission is partially or wholly within their scope.
The W3C membership is invited to discuss the disposition of the submission in the w3c-ac-forum mailing list or to advise the director in confidence via W3C staff contact.
