This was inspired by bug 7011, but just expands on a specific technique that had been given as an example of partial solution to that bug.

Rationale: There is no way to get anything out of a <canvas> other than pixel data — it's an immediate mode API. For retained-mode graphics on the Web, the right technology to use is SVG.
