Didn't see any document metadata via <meta> tags inside the
document itself.

Could also add a <link> entry providing a document icon, which is
helpful in tabbed browsers.

Rationale: The W3C HTML5 spec just follows W3C publication rules on this matter.

perhaps this is a deficiency in the pubrules.  certainly one might reasonably expect the HTML5 Recommendation to follow best practices for document metadata since it is such an important HTML example itself.

It's totally a deficiency of the pubrules, but I've given up trying to change their mind on this. If you want to see a version of HTML5 that uses HTML5, the WHATWG have one at  http://whatwg.org/html5 .
