We need to build RPMs of a supported version of OpenSP before release.
Some things to consider here: OpenSP is written in C, hence it is platform/distro dependent. What platforms do we intend to support or distribute binaries for? The source RPM should be made as portable as possible. For example Red Hat distributes an older version of OpenSP in the openjade-1.3.1 package. Must take care that the packaged, newer OpenSP doesn't interfere with the already existing openjade package. Maybe installing into /usr/local instead of the normal RPM way of using /usr would be enough.
This one depends on the OpenSP tarball (#52).
I'm not aiming for supporting much more then just current Red Hat with the RPMs. If anyone wants to take on the task of maintaining a "binary" package for other systems... I'm hoping there will eventually be a new release of OpenSP 1.5 that will obviate the need to distribute Validator-specific binaries. In particular, since OpenJade now links against a standalone OpenSP I have hopes OpenSP 1.5 will make it into the most relevant distributions eventually.
Providing the RPMs (only) for RH8 is fine with me, but I guess we have to be careful not to make the impression that W3C endorses any specific platform or distro... perhaps need to ask about this on qa-dev.
Since it looks like a final release of OpenSP 1.5 is right around the corner, we might get away with just pointing at SourceForge.
Since it looks like there will be RPMs directly from the OpenJade Project I suggest we just close this bug and point to SF.net.
Fine with me, closing this to get it out of the way. In the meantime, the required RPMs for RH8 are at <http://cachalot.ods.org/>.
