Provide totally ordered duration types, specifically one that is expressed only in years and months, and one that is expressed only in days, hours, minutes, and seconds (ignoring leap seconds.) Possibly define other totally ordered duration types such as day/hour/minute and hour/minute/second duration. Proposal: yearMonthDuration and dayTimeDuration as defined in XQuery and XPath Function and Operators (http://www.w3.org/TR/xquery-operators/) This requirement has been satisfied by the inclusion of the types in question in the Datatypes spec. In January 2006, the XML Query and XSL Working Groups agreed to use names in the XML Schema namespace for these types; our definitions and theirs must agree in all details.
