It seems reasonable that a replaced box may be a table-cell box, yet none of Gecko, Webkit and Opera permit this; instead they appear to wrap the replaced box in an anonymous table cell, and change the display type of the replaced box. See attachments above.
Trident seems fine with the idea of a replaced table-cell.
