There's now lots of people experimenting with Shadow DOM (like http://blog.quickui.org/2013/06/03/quetzal-an-experimental-translation-of-quickui-component-model-to-html-custom-elements/ and http://www.polymer-project.org/), so this is no longer a pressing concern.

Thanks for considering. I really need to have the folks engineering the controls look at and provide the feedback to Shadow DOM. Since that's something I need to do, I think it's great to close this bug. No guilt necessary.
