This sentence is rather confusing, it seems to indicate that <data> should be
used with data-*, or can be replaced by data-*: "The element can also,
however, be used in conjunction with scripts in the page, for when a script
has store a literal value alongside a human-readable value. In such cases, the
format to be used depends only on the needs of the script. (The data-*
attributes can also be useful in such situations.)" It could use some
clarification.

I'm not really sure how to clarify it... <data> can indeed be used with data-*, or can be replaced by data-*, depending on what you're doing. Can you elaborate on what is unclear?
