Gecko supports an enableInlineTableEditing command.  Needs investigation.  Suggested by Alfonso Martínez de Lizarrondo:

At least one of the problems with that command is that it's a global toggle which affects all tables in an editable section.  While all of the rest of the execCommand APIs are that way, I would like to avoid specifying another sucky API if possible...  ;-)

But I must also add that this is definitely wanted for web developers, I think.  Without this feature, there is no easy way to edit tables on the web...
