CAPTCHA

jasonjgw proposes we create a draft report for APA by end April. Notes that we have some emerging themes from current analysis of literature and other publications.

jasonjgw: how complete is our issue list? Are there other issues we haven't yet articulated that are present in the literature?

Emerging issues summarised in this email sent to the list: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-rqtf/2017Feb/0021.html

<jasonjgw> https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-rqtf/2017Feb/0021.html

scott_h: has also shared key points from reviewing papers in a recent email to the list

<janina> http://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/wiki/CAPTCHA_v2

https://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/wiki/Captcha_Alternatives_and_thoughts

This second resource is a more up to date list of tools and methods, provided by the WCAG WG.

jasonjgw: proposes all TF members to review his informal note on CAPTCHA themes for completeness, identify additional themes that may be missing and share by email in the first instance

Focus of our work needs to consider trends towards CAPTCHA alternatives, and accessibility implications

Trend towards visual recognition technology for authentication of learners taking proctored online tests. These could have accessibility implications. sloandr will look for more resources on this topic

all agreed with jasonjgw's proposal to review themes for next week.

<Zakim> janina, you wanted to recall the old PF wiki on captcha for cross-check

authentication

jasonjgw: has been reading about biometric authentication and implications on people whose characteristics may change due to disability. Revised Section 508 standard has regulatory provision use of biometrics for authentication
... regulation biometric authentication should not rely on a single biological characteristic to authenticate, e.g. fingerprints

shadi: believes there is some mention of authentication and accessibility in EN301549

jasonjgw: would be helpful to summarise regulatory and standards coverage of biometrics and accessibility
... continuous monitoring as an authentication approach is another area of possible concern

continuous monitoring might be of position or appearance of a person, and implications of computer vision/algorithms versus human monitoring

scott_h: tapping a rhythm on a mobile device as an authentication method—could be an accessibility aid or problem

jasonjgw: another area with accessibility concern is authentication solutions that involve regularly updating tokens provided by hardware devices or apps, where the token has to be entered within a specific time period into some kind of online form
... proposes all TF members collect and categorise techniques described in papers from the literature review, document these techniques and their accessibility implications

Web of Things

shadi: W4A paper on accessibility and Web of Things was accepted so will be made publicly available. Has also talked with Clayton Lewis and Klaus Miesenberger about research in this area. Response from community has been positive.

<shadi> https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/wiki/Web_of_Things

shadi: looking at continuing to raise awareness in the research community, and working on use cases documented on wiki page

jasonjgw: propose we continue to think about Web of Things while working on CAPTCHA and authentication actions
