Identification and review of relevant research.

More references have been added to the Authentication and CAPTCHA collections. Formatting of reference lists has been updated to include details on location and restriction on access to full text of the paper.

<janina> scribe: Janina

sloandr: Have doubled the list of a11y focussed resources, so probably ready for review and notes on wiki
... Noting we have both an authentication list, as well as a captcha list
... Have also indicated where I found the various resources

<sloandr> scribe: sloandr

jasonjgw: next step to organise reviewers for each reference, suggest using a wiki page or email to allow individuals to volunteer to take on selected papers

<scribe> ACTION: all to select references to review. jasonjgw will set up a wiki page to collect notes [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2017/01/18-rqtf-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Error finding 'all'. You can review and register nicknames at <http://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/track/users>.

jasonjgw: also need to consider work that hasn't yet reached publication. Do we focus on that now, or wait until the review process has finished?

scott_h: has added some extra references that are not in academic publication databases
... how many people will be involved in assessment of literature? Will be useful to know this to manage the work

Web/Internet of Things.

shadi: Web/Internet of Things is a hard to define area but has major opportunity for people with disabilities. W3C focus is on Web of Things, now a full working group to extend open web platform to IoT, with a focus on addressing interoperability issues.
... lots of competitor closed systems, so a challenge of open-ness and interoperability. This is a major challenge for accessibility
... systems/APIs need to support communication via AT to enable operation by people with disabilities
... this is an area for research for RQTF to inform W3C's work in this area
... more information available at https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/wiki/Web_of_Things
... accessibility community can contribute by providing use cases for WoT WG, and for Silver TF and potentially other W3C activities
... in the wiki page just referenced, has started work on a set of outline use cases, to start discussion in RQTF and in accessibility research community
... configuration of devices is another challenge
... privacy and security is also a challenge, which may disproportionately affect people with disabilities
... may also be use cases for accessibility guidelines that apply to IoT systems
... will add more related resources to the wiki page, but published research on accessibility and IoT/WoT is fairly limited

Judy: this is a really exciting approach to connecting accessibility research with WG activity in a meaningful way. Spread of use cases is helpful in illustrating what the issues are.

shadi: emphasises that this wiki page is intended for review and improvement. Other contributions are welcome

janina: APA is interested in this area, and has a call next week to discuss co-ordination across W3C to ensure accessibility is appropriately included. Not always clear what APA should be asking for from different WGs.
... accessibility challenges of configurability—think we are still in a space where industry tends to reuse existing methods rather than rethinking a more appropriate method for IoT devices
... in US, requirements for accessible media mean settings for captions/audio description must be prominent, so industry awareness should be increasing

shadi: other projects to explore/revisit, like GPII project, Universal Remote Control, W3C's CC/PP

scott_H: will be starting a research project on IoT in classroom environment

action jasonjgw follow up with scott_h on comments on WoT

<scott_h> apologies - phone connection dropped out and unable to connect back in

jasonjgw encourages all TF members to review the page shadi shared and add notes/comments

WoT wiki page: https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/wiki/Web_of_Things

<shadi> https://www.w3.org/WoT/

Other topics requiring coordination.

<janina> sloandr: Can update re Silver & RQTF ... No need for input yet

<janina> sloandr: WCAG is still staffing its work
