RESOLUTION: Publish as submitted
We have a digital publishing joint meeting next Monday. Structural semantics for books. Use ARIA roles for things beyond just books.
richardschwerdtfeger: there might be an issue with our request that there be a fallback role so that if a role is not known something happens.
... what is the status of the SVG joint work?
janina: we are working with them but it is not top priority because of longdesc / html5.0
... BTW Joani just implemented longdesc in Orca.,
<janina> https://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2014-August/msg00327.html
richardschwerdtfeger: is it native or using a plugin?
janina: not sure.
janina: HTML is going to try to move longdesc to PR. SVG we are working on the work statement.
Defer this item to next week.
janina: there was a first draft a few years ago that, among other things, prevents zooming.
cyns: If it is just a first public working draft is it dead?
janina: no - people are implementing it. Apparently this is the new model.
... which leads to the thought should we be changing our model and not waiting until last call to do reviews.
... this spec may have serious a11y implications.
JN: People use this feature on web apps so that they behave like native apps (native apps on an iPhone, for example, do not permit zooming)
MichaelC: I have had this problem with Opera on my phone.
ShaneM: The spec is from Opera so that makes sense.
richardschwerdtfeger: CSS has always provided a way to allow the user to override the settings.
janina: sure - that is one of our requirements.
MichaelC: If a user has a user stylesheet with a !important then it might cascade and work, but it would not effect the meta tag.
cyns: and no one uses user stylesheets anyway. too geeky.
richardschwerdtfeger: I am not even sure user stylesheets work.
MichaelC: A preference could work.
cyns: Sure, but maybe we should be saying that this is a bad idea in the first place.
JN: I don't agree. People should be able to make a web app look and behave like a native app.

<trackbot> Created ACTION-1500 - Find out if ms is implementing this. [on Cynthia Shelly - due 2014-08-27].
<scribe> ACTION: Janina to ask James Craig about whether Apple is implementing this. [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2014/08/20-pf-minutes.html#action02]
<trackbot> Created ACTION-1501 - Ask james craig about whether apple is implementing this. [on Janina Sajka - due 2014-08-27].
janina: We need to figure out how hard to dig in our heels. We also need to be paying more attention to first working drafts.
cyns: We also need to be working more closely with vendor a11y people so that this stuff gets addressed earlier.
<scribe> ACTION: Janina to ask the Mozilla people about whether this is being implemented. [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2014/08/20-pf-minutes.html#action03]
<trackbot> Created ACTION-1502 - Ask the mozilla people about whether this is being implemented. [on Janina Sajka - due 2014-08-27].
JN: I would bet that all the major mobile browsers are implementing it.
... For the record I tell people to not use these properties. But I get push back.
janina: one thing we could do is suggest text that would advise people to only use these features if there is no other option.
MichaelC: We last cleaned the list on 10 July.
... actually 10 July was a minor edit. looking further back on the Wiki...
