<trackbot> Meeting: WebFonts Working Group Teleconference

<trackbot> Date: 04 June 2014

<scribe> scribenick: ChrisL

Vlad: we have confirmation of hosting from atypi
... one issue remaining on woff2
... any time constrainst on fpwd to lc?

ChrisL: we can move to LC as soon as we have no issues

Vlad: so we should plan for conformance testing
... fpwd triggers patent exclusion opportunity

ChrisL: (explains exclusion periods and patent disclosure)

Vlad: patent from monotype is unlimited, irrevocable and broader in scope than woff or that w3c requires

woff2 exclusion is until until 05 October 2014

normalize size

Vlad: wanted to remove the suggested buffer size. raph has an opinion. raph will make it more definitive

kuettel: will talk to raph about this

f2f

Vlad: Tues 15 Sept, Barcelona

test plan

ChrisL: (explains usual testing methos with defined testable assertions)

<scribe> ACTION: vlad to mark up woff2 testable assertions [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2014/06/04-webfonts-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-131 - Mark up woff2 testable assertions [on Vladimir Levantovsky - due 2014-06-11].

action-130?

<trackbot> action-130 -- Vladimir Levantovsky to - contact the atypi organizers and ask if they can host the meeting for ~12 people on sep. 16 -- due 2014-06-04 -- OPEN

<trackbot> http://www.w3.org/Fonts/WG/track/actions/130

close action-130

<trackbot> Closed action-130.

ChrisL: finding testable assertions helps make a crisp spec and gets rid of wooly, unclear phrases

Vlad: its easier when there is soething concrete to review

kuettel: agreed
... how far into testing would we be by the f2f

Vlad: finalized test plan
... then deciding who develops which test

kuettel: and good for us all to be there in person

Vlad: in woff1 there was a lot of work, Tal Leming was super helpful doing that. May be able to reuse some of that here

kuettel: we are testing woff2 in production. In chrome 36 10% of fonts are in woff2 now

Vlad: we are super efficient and emptied the agenda

kuettel: jkew said that he was excited to start implementing woff2 in firefox
... data from real world usage would be very helpful here

Vlad: leonardo at mpeg asked if w3c is doing new font compression, why not also use it in mpeg
... freindly enquiry, would give lots of technical review on brotli

kuettel: did reach out internally, compression team was happy with progress and wanted to continue as is with w3c and ietf, then look at iso afterwards

Vlad: iso standardization has benefit of technical review and also a solid status wrt an IETF RFC

action-126?

<trackbot> action-126 -- David Kuettel to Check publication of security review -- due 2014-01-15 -- OPEN

<trackbot> http://www.w3.org/Fonts/WG/track/actions/126

kuettel: kenji gave an update on that a while ago. went through a lot of fuzz testing, fixed the issues

ChrisL: its more to show the work has been done

rfc for brotli

Vlad: has internet draft been published?

http://www.spinics.net/lists/ietf-ann/msg85903.html

draft -01

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-alakuijala-brotli-01

dated May 16

ChrisL: suspect woff2 links to -00 not -01?

Vlad: no, its already 01
... link text needs updating
... it needs to move to informational RFC, not a draft which is only 6 months lifespan

kuettel: having this as an RFC would be a good goal for the f2f meeting

ChrisL: sounds like a great goal

<scribe> ACTION: kuettel to track progress of brotli ID to RFC [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2014/06/04-webfonts-minutes.html#action02]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-132 - Track progress of brotli id to rfc [on David Kuettel - due 2014-06-11].

action-132?

<trackbot> action-132 -- David Kuettel to Track progress of brotli id to rfc -- due 2014-06-11 -- OPEN

<trackbot> http://www.w3.org/Fonts/WG/track/actions/132

updated due date to 2014-09-10

Vlad: next meeting depends on the size issue
... so postpone to week after, depending on response

kuettel: time frees up after Google.io

(adjourned)
