about media types.

Vlad spoke informally to Larry.

Larry asks what we want to get out of a new media type.

How far we get is dependent on how we answer the question.

Getting a good story together is the first important task.

Vlad: Plan to use new compression technology in WOFF2, IETF might be a good place to put it.

IETF is maybe not a good place for a standards track document.

Lack of compression experts or other interest there might be bad for it.

ISO might be better?

Where do most compression standards exist?

ZLIP Compressed Data format is IETF.

Spec there is "information only".

ZLIB seems legitimate enough, so it just depends on people being comfortable with IETF as a vehicle.

If it starts as info only, it could move to standards track later.

Vlad: The lack of process complexity makes it easier to publish.

jfkthame: More formal process might help with comfort around patents.

Vlad: ISO has experts which will better-vet the technology and IP.

cslye: How do we decide which avenue to take?

Vlad: Best that WG members talk to colleagues and bring back an opinion/preference.

Vlad: MPEG committee. Knows compression.

Some overlap between MPEG and JPEG committees.

jfkthame: Less experience with lossless compression?

Vlad: Not a big deal. One stage of larger compression picture.

kuettel: Nothing yet. Maybe next week.
