<scribe> Scribe:Ghislain
<scribe> ScribeNick:gatemezi
<sandro> scribe: sandro
<bhyland> @Ghislain are you able to hear the call?
gatemezi, I'm scribing until you get here.
<bhyland> Approve last week's minutes: http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/meeting/2012-08-16
<gatemezi> @sandro : Thanks
bhyland: F2F at TPAC? No.
... If you're attending TPAC ...
+1 I'm going to TPAC
<HadleyBeeman> I'm planning to attend TPAC
<BartvanLeeuwen> +1 be at TPAC
bhyland: My hope is that we make some progress -- using it as a deadline, a chance for some people to talk, maybe a chance to present.
<scribe> scribe: gatemezi
<luisBermudez> aaee is me
<sandro> me
<cygri> me
UNKNOWN_SPEAKER: plans to go for the TPAC
sandro is going also for the TPAC...Somebody from DERI? @cygri for sure
<bhyland> Attending: Sandro, Bernadette, (Dave Wood), Hadley (maybe), Richard C,
bhyland: Anyone form the Provenance Group going to TPAC?
<bhyland> TPAC Schedule: http://www.w3.org/2012/10/TPAC/
<bhyland> http://www.w3.org/2012/10/TPAC/#GroupSchedule
<olyerickson> Will there be a UnConference format again this year? If so, opportunity for GLD breakout...
<HadleyBeeman> my thought too, olyerickson
bhyland: In TPAC has a lighthing session..should GLD stand up to speak this year ?
<bhyland> zakim aabb is Mike_Pendleton
olyerickson: He attended in one TPAC some years ago...There is a way to do a breakout for GLD group
<bhyland> Olyerickson: Suggested we consider a breakout on GLD WG @ TPAC, if there is an extension available.
<sandro> sandro: It looks like it will be unconf again: http://www.w3.org/wiki/TPAC2012
HadleyBeeman: There is always a benefit to speak during the TPAC..
<olyerickson> @bhyland Note that PROV is pretty intense...
<sandro> sandro: We've given up on the idea of a 2-day meeting, but we could still do an unconference session on Wednesday (but as Hadley says, that would be lots of work to prepare)
<sandro> [ and yet, unconference sessions are not supposed to take much work.... ? ]
<bhyland> Review minutes: http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/meeting/2012-08-16
<HadleyBeeman> Actually, sandro, I don't think it would need to be lots of work. I think we could organise a constructive dialogue with the rest of the community with what we have already.
<BenediktKaempgen> +1
<BartvanLeeuwen> +1
<bhyland> Accepted
<sandro> +1
+1
<Yigal> +1
<olyerickson> Not me!
<sandro> gatemezi, is that you? +33.4.93.00.aadd
URL of the actual version: https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/gld/raw-file/default/glossary/index.html
bhyland: Is it better a Working Note or just a wiki page for LD glossary?
<bhyland> zakim aaff is Biplav
<sandro> bhyland: Please email me any changes you want to the glossary
bhyland: Could we have a look at
the glossary and send mail to Ghislain or Bernadette for
changing /adding items
... we need to have some momentum as a group
<olyerickson> Terms needed: Application, Mashup, Hackathon
bhyland: Any question about that?
<olyerickson> Need abbreviations more prominent: SOA, SKOS, URI, HTML, HTTP,
bhyland: What is the actual status? What people are working on?
sandro: Suggest for transition for review...
bhyland feels that there is a need of more discussion in some parts of the document
<bhyland> Question for the group: What barriers or hurdles are you facing that the GLD should address in the Best Practices doc?
<sandro> sandro: Let's have people start to note whether the right things are in this doc
<sandro> Mike_Pendleton: We're running into issues. Even DB experts / enterprise architects have trouble understanding what LD is and how it will help.
Mike_Pendleton: People want to know what LD is, or what is the benefit of it
<bhyland> Mike_Pendleton: Running into fundamental issues related to the basics around Linked Data in the eyes of an experienced enterprise IT manager
<sandro> Mike_Pendleton: We've got a FAQ for these people; it's not quite BPs but might be useful.
<bhyland> …. communicating the benefits so they could buy into it.
<tinagheen> @Mike_Pendleton - can you please share the document when it is out of draft, even if it is not included in Best Practices?
<Mike_Pendleton> Sure
<Mike_Pendleton> Happy to
<olyerickson> +1 to notion of Best Practices "FAQ"
<olyerickson> RE Words to include in Glossary: Note my previous suggestions (above)
@olyerickson: you mean SOA, SKOS, URI, HTML and HTTP?
<bhyland> HadleyBeeman: Gov't data is generally lots of small data that only have meaning when stitched together.
<olyerickson> Yes, and above that (Application, Mashup, Hackathon, etc)
<bhyland> … Use terms that people are familiar with, cross reference terms in Wikipedia, to emphasis is not necessary new & maveric, it is tested & proven.
<BartvanLeeuwen> +1
<BartvanLeeuwen> +q
bhyland: GLD could help in giving "meaning" aroud big data, huge data process, etc..
<bhyland> Biplav: Practical issue people face when considering LOD is tooling that is available ...
<bhyland> … If we can make some suggestions around tooling, that would go a long way.
<BartvanLeeuwen> +1 for showcases
<Mike_Pendleton> +1 Bernadette - we need to say where LOD fits in the Big Data paradigm (hitch our wagon to it because it has cache)
<bhyland> … Community Directory is useful to let people interested in LD technology to locate it.
<DaveReynolds> +1 to bhyland not appropriate for the WG to recommend specific tool chains
<bhyland> … Tutorials would be helpful
what about just giving the links of the tutorials of the tools in ComDir?
<bhyland> … Example Biplav gave was transportation domain, how do we use technology to determine high level concepts for transportation …
bhyland: encourages @biplav to send a mail to clarify all the ideas he has in main for the transportation domain
<bhyland> … Biplav: answered questions like 'what is a vehicle?, what is a route?'
<Mike_Pendleton> Jeff Hollister (US EPA) has attempted to quanitfy how LOD approaches will save money/time for his limnological (freshwater lakes) research efforts. We need pithy annecdotes to support our assertions about the benefits of LOD.
<BartvanLeeuwen> -q
DaveReynolds: Is the BP doc ready for reviewing ?
<Biplav> Agree with @Ghislain that links to tutorials will be helpful.
Pragmatic Provenance URL: http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/wiki/Best_Practices_Discussion_Summary#Pragmatic_Provenance
<bhyland> http://www.w3.org/2011/gld/charter
bhyland: The chairs will contact the different editors for re-scheduling our WG
<bhyland> Open discussion around selling LOD internally ...
<bhyland> Internal bias to use the technology & approaches that are known
TinaGleen: It could be benefit to show clearly the benefits of LOD in enterprises..
<bhyland> Bart: He is seeing the same thing
<bhyland> … every uses the Web to find things but when they need *authoritative* data, they're biased towards a traditional monolithic system
<bhyland> TinaGheen: People are focused internally & their own content, rather than on linking to external data sets.
<bhyland> George: We're seeing some convergence, beginning to see convergence of global name space, value of key:value pairs, they start to get it.
<BartvanLeeuwen> +q
<bhyland> … when you can show 'cooperation without coordination' it makes the case easier.
<bhyland> BartvanLeeuwen: It is tough to encapsulate that in a BP doc.
<bhyland> Olyerickson: There is something different in selling the Web 2.0 meme vs. Linked Data meme … there were a set of activities, a certain Web utilization model and Tim O'Reilly came up with a name & attributes for describing it.
Maybe we need more collaborative work (or porjects ) around LOD involving academics and enterprises..
<bhyland> … this helped define the meme that entrepreneurs, VCs & developers understood.
<bhyland> … This helped define "labels" or buckets to understand what people were doing.
<bhyland> … In the case of Linked Data, there has been less organic pull, and thus less of organic rise of business models to propel the meme forward.
<olyerickson> +1 to skidaddling... (sp?)
<olyerickson> Thanks bhyland
<HadleyBeeman> Thanks, bhyland!
bhyland: encourage editors to continue working on different docs
<BartvanLeeuwen> thanks bhyland !
<bhyland> Thanks all!
<olyerickson> Bye!
<Biplav> Thanks bhyland!
<DaveReynolds> bye
Thanks all!
<BenediktKaempgen> Bye!
