Agenda review

Action Items

<scribe> ACTION: all: review working with time zones with an eye to publishing to wider review for next week [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/12/01-i18n-minutes.html#action01]

addison: send update note to public@ about WWTZ to remind all to review document
... reply to widgets in favor of Marcos's solution and asking for locale to be returned to the API

aharon: check DOM3 events to see if they have included our issue about keyboard locale

Info Share

kenny: webkit has vertical text in nightly build

addison: and it's coming along pretty well

<freedom> vertical text in WebKit is for Mac platform only now

<kennyluck>

<r12a> i seem to have network connectivity again

<freedom> https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48459

<kennyluck>

<kennyluck>

kennyluck: introducing freedom...
... comes from Taiwan, interested in vertical text in epub

richard: writing modes spec is about to become a First Public Working Draft

<kennyluck> aphillip: Was that part of the the transitions?

<kennyluck> r12a: yeah

<kennyluck> aphillip: I have an agendum item about bidi, but we don't have bidi people here for today.

bidi

richard summarizes

richard: aharon making a summary document
... lots of progress

Vertical Text progress

<r12a> http://freebsd.csie.nctu.edu.tw/~freedom/html5/vertical-hant-2.html

<kennyluck> Aharon's document

richard: small question first
... at the freebsd link above...
... there are small spaces after punctuation marks
... why is that?

<r12a> 中。 雕

<r12a> 4E2D [CJK Unified Ideographs]

<r12a> 3002 IDEOGRAPHIC FULL STOP

<r12a> 0020 SPACE

<r12a> 96D5 [CJK Unified Ideographs]

freedom: appears to be a typo

<r12a> http://www.w3.org/International/tests/tests-html-css/list-text-direction#verticaltext

richard: main point is that we have beginnings of tests
... for vertical text
... good to keep them in same style and location
... in part because I can generate CSS tests in format that CSS wg (such as fantasai) likes
... but also easier to maintain
... can you discuss tests with me, please?

kennyluck: referring to epub folks such as EGLS
... will make efforts to get tests into W3C space

richard: if they have their own test format, then we can talk to them about how to convert their tests
... if the don't have tests yet, then perhaps we can ask them to base on our format

freedom: created tests just to see if they work
... I can modify my tests to match

CSS3 Text progress

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Member/member-i18n-core/2010Dec/0001.html

<kennyluck>

kenny: we need to/might want to add to review radar
... the CSS3 Text modules

<kennyluck>

kenny: problem in Indic communities
... such as above comment to www-style
... above sends a document with browser/CSS bugs
... doesn't address every text feature
... and if others don't know how to address CSS

richard: this is a very old document that has had a lot of input
... it is always good to have people look at it
... last call is important
... but also during document development
... as far as Indic is concerned, Somnath has requested a TF and asked for a chair
... working on helping him to get TF started up
... document put together over the summer
... gave feedback about splitting up concerns
... part of answer is that we know about certain things
... but maybe some things are missing, which we'd like to hear about them
... and native speakers input is valuable
... shouldn't be too worried about indic yet, since they are just getting going but hope to be organized soon

<kennyluck> ahillip: Some of the vertical text examples use in the CSS spec had copyright issues, that we should try to avoid.

kenny: fantasai asked for Indic, SEA, and Arabic script text users

richard: is this the best time to do it? might be
... can contact bidi folks on bidi list
... SEA is a little more complicated
... can ask www-international list
... but is this the best time to review?

kenny: not sure how we can make progress with out comments

<kennyluck>

andrew: discussion could break down because of browser support, etc.

<kennyluck> ACTION: kenny to ask the Korean HTML5 Interest Group what should happen if "word-break: keep-all" is used with "word-wrap: break-all" [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/12/01-i18n-minutes.html#action02]

<r12a> http://www.w3.org/International/core/review-radar

<kennyluck> r12a: We can 1. send various mails to MLs 2. announce this in our homepage

<scribe> ACTION: richard: ask fantasai what bits of CSS3 are most interested in being commented upon [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/12/01-i18n-minutes.html#action03]

Info Share (additional)

richard: it turns out iPod/iOS4 now supports font downloads

<r12a> http://www.zeldman.com/2010/11/26/web-type-news-iphone-and-ipad-now-support-truetype-font-embedding-this-is-huge/

richard: did some tests
... like webkit, it doesn't use opentype features
... so not that useful for many scripts
... but good to point it out anyway

AOB?

<scribe> ACTION: richard: move the two I18N meetings so that they don't overlap [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/12/01-i18n-minutes.html#action04]
