Minutes and Agenda review

richard: status on character encoding stuff

Action Items

addison: ask device api WG when it would be appropriate to revew contacts API document

<scribe> DONE

Info Share

aharon: response on the keyboard language proposal
... some objections
... could pursue in their last call
... or could create a separate document
... I would prefer to pursue in LC

addison: DOM3 LC is coming up and we will include in our LC comments

richard: ask them to include in last call as proposal-at-risk

<scribe> ACTION: addison: write to dom3 folks and ask them to consider including keyboard "language" as proposal-at-risk in their LC document [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/09/01-core-minutes.html#action01]

richard: we now have a public-i18n-cjk@ list
... and a public-i18n-indic@ list
... CJK list is for discussing all things CJK
... created to relieve www-international@ list from this traffic
... so everyone will see the comments
... not just for JLRec
... in a related vein, may set up HTML5 Korean list
... our goal is separate
... including list traffic in english
... indic list set up because W3C india office would like a TF
... to develop a document similar to JLReq document
... focusing on Indic language support

addison: iri WG will start weekly in about 2 weeks

status on character encoding stuff

richard: more changes in offing
... working on what used to be serving xhtml1.0
... now called....
... serving HTML and XHTML

<r12a> http://www.w3.org/International/articles/serving-xhtml/

richard: attempting to genericize
... take out old-fashioned and complicated stuff
... hard to say anything about XHTML5
... stays with HTML5 mainly
... other document (Encoding Definitions)

<r12a> http://www.w3.org/International/articles/definitions-characters

richard: had some stuff about mime types and quirks, now removed
... still going through comments
... some more minor changes as a result
... not quite ready to launch documents
... hope to target next week

Contacts API follow up

addison: will call into telecon Friday

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-i18n-core/2010JulSep/0113.html

addison: anyone interested in leading contacts api review?

<fsasaki> Felix: I'd be happy to contribute

<fsasaki> .. but lead? well ...

addison to lead coordination of comments, andrew, felix interested in contributing but cannot lead it

scripts by language

<r12a> http://rishida.net/scripts/featurelist/

richard: be aware of this table
... help mobile folks understand what they might need to support

WWTZ

http://www.w3.org/International/wiki/WorkingWithTimeZones

addison: updated guidelines sections
... think we might be ready for wider review
... would like your feedback first?

<scribe> ACTION: all: review working with time zones with an eye to publishing to wider review for next week [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/09/01-core-minutes.html#action02]

Bidi topics (per paragraph auto-direction, etc)

aharon: what do people think about per-paragraph dir=uba
... concern on the list
... I had objected to f2f design because too difficult
... alternative that is much more limited would be better
... limited to <textarea> and a new <pre>-like element
... could limit dir=uba to elements that have no child elements

addison: hard to validate
... some child elements don't affect directionality but are useful

aharon: could propose new element
... no one seconded my idea
... is anyone interested in more limited definition?

addison: can we implement uba (or something similar) as a general attribute value
... define clear rules for what to do if we see child elements

Aharon to send a new proposal to public-i18n-bidi@

aharon: intend to send a proposal for dir=auto and different estimation methods
... this is separate from uba and temporarily assumes doesn't exist
... one additional value to dir
... which is auto
... and additional attribute dir-method
... "first-strong", "any-rtl" are the values
... and could define more in the future
... word count was rejected by f2f
... nor character count
... because coefficients to use require extensive research
... and no proof that it is more useful
... don't feel can advance without the reasearch

addison: which is default?

aharon: first-strong
... uba could be worked in as dir-method
... has some CSS implications
... hope to get guidance from e.g. fantasai
... any thoughts?

addison: look forward to proposal :-)

AOB?

<r12a> addison, do you have a sec to discuss madrid workshop?
