respond to HTML WG on polyglot issue 7 endorsing our editorial change

Input Locale text for DOM3

aharon: item not responded to was from andrew

andrew: question about what happens in some circumstances
... terminology kept changing; what is the locale for each platform
... e.g. input locale is distinct in windows from system locale
... while other operating systems it isn't the same

aharon: familiar with windows and also linux

addison: presentation in linux is from input framework

aharon: doesn't bother me, just setting up API

andrew: e.g. in windows, the only input locales are microsoft ones

aharon: two cases where no info
... 1. browser doesn't know (so null)
... or incorrect value
... it's just a heuristic

andrew: might want to (try to) restrict use cases
... text direction is one thing
... but maybe smart quotes would be a problem for minority languages
... would break text because things are changing

aharon: know that this is true; but smart quotes are desire by implementations

addison: may be a good source for FAQs in the future

aharon: google online processor: only English smart quotes
... won't solve the problem anyway
... but could help solve problems

norbert: proposal does not specify the locale identifer; should say BCP 47
... currently say "locale", shouldn't we say "language"

andrew: browser must translate input locale to a language tag

<scribe> ACTION: Aharon: publish latest text of input locale to public core list for approval and then forward if no objections [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/07/28-core-minutes.html#action01]

norbert: return 'null' or 'undefined'
... ask DOM people which?

aharon: what name to use?
... we said various things
... use same name as input andkeyboard event
... don't want to use keyboardLocale
... inputModeLocale is obfuscated in keyboard event
... other possibility is inputLocale
... which I object to because it says the very thing we want to avoid
... that it is the locale of the data being entered

andrew: inputLocale actually has a defined meaning on windows

david: sourceLocale?

IRI progress

addison summarizes

richard: problem getting technical discussing going. why not?

addison: need another editor
