Bidi WG Note progress

Addison: Thanks to Richard for FPWD

Richard: still have to get people to move over to new mailing list

Najib: some very good emails, need to work on answering to issues raised

<r12a> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-i18n-bidi/2010JanMar/

Richard: HTML folks sound eager to incorporate bidi
... need to start feeding requests to them
... need to look for uncontroversial issues

Najib: some issues raised on most topics that seemed uncontroversial
... e.g. usage of yes/no attribute values
... so discussion still needed
... maybe a few items that could be closed, but not significant parts of proposal

Addison: be cautious about forwarding items; may still be affected by discussion in other areas of doc
... take holistic approach

Najib: but HMTL is eager to close spec

Richard: HTML wants to get involved in discussions
... unfortunately not experts

<najib> What about renaming rename bdi attribute by sce (self contained entity)

<aphillip> go ahead najib...

<najib> <span sce dir="ltr"> -3 review.</span>

<najib> or <sce dir="ltr"> -3 review.</sce>

<najib> SCE is what give semantic to directional run

<najib> that's all

<r12a> najib, please send that comment to the public-i18n-bidi list, if you haven't already

<najib> OK

Addison: need to move fast and use bug mechanism, but make sure document is ready
... to enable holistic discussion with non-experts

Richard: we need to contribute to discussion and move it forward
... and then engage HTML group

<aphillip> agendum for next week: discuss bidi

<aphillip> ACTION: all: review the bidi note document, sending comments as appropriate, by next teleconference (17 March) [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/03/10-core-minutes.html#action03]

Aharon: need to look at constants in word counting algorithms to determine RTL/LTR
... look at publicly available text, e.g., blogs, where direction has been set by editor

<najib> :-)

Aharon: this could take some months, but we don't seem to have that time
... take the time, or make a guess?

Addison: do the constants have to be in the spec?
... Google may be able to help with data analysis

Aharon: constants have significant impact; so far assuming 40% RTL means RTL, but people question this

Addison: word counting may not be most important feature

Richard: can it be left to the implementation?

Aharon: thinking is that should leave as little as possible to the implementation

Richard: may need help from HTML folks; flag as issue

Addison: continue discussion next week

Richard: discuss on list

Addison: need way to track issues and close them
... don't rely on issues scattered in document
... need list with numbers

Richard: can we engage the HTML folks without waiting for another rev of the document?

Addison: need to set up review table, then engage with HTML as a group

<aphillip> ACTION: Aharon: send to our mail list list of issues ready for HTML-WG and list of issues to address in our document [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/03/10-core-minutes.html#action04]

Richard: use wiki table for issues lists

Aharon: is editor for bidi document

Richard: will provide help with tools

AOB?

Richard: bidi for widgets?
... need to provide examples

<aphillip> ACTION: richard: provide bidi examples for widgets P&C [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2010/03/10-core-minutes.html#action05]
