<dom_scribe> Memory test
<scribe> ACTION: Dom to check if we can host the memory test on a W3C server [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/27-mwts-minutes.html#action09] [PENDING]
<scribe> ACTION: Kai to make success message in memory test more userfriendly [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/27-mwts-minutes.html#action10] [DONE]
Kai: I changed the message, but I'm not too sure it's much more user friendly
Dom: some problems when going up in the memory scale - the highest page is not rendered on my palm
Kai: not too sure how to work
around that; maybe need to make going up and down by clicking
rather than automatically
... I'll look into it
<scribe> ACTION: Kai to look further into memory test usability [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/02/03-mwts-minutes.html#action08]
Wilhelm: also, having the front page listing some reasonable values could be useful
<scribe> ACTION: Dom to run the memory test on his devices [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/06-mwts-minutes.html#action08] [PENDING]
Dom: started, but want to test more and report
<scribe> ACTION: Wilhelm to run the memory test on his devices [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/06-mwts-minutes.html#action07] [PENDING]
Wilhelm: will do that tomorrow
Kai: I have tested it on a few
devices now
... most mobile devices do reasonably well
... I think we shouldn't overrate the memory limitation
problem
... in the guidelines - it's likely not a big problem
Dom: we actually hit that problem in some of our test reviews: the javascript performance tests, the DOM Level test, etc
Wilhelm: there are different
problems that big memory usage can bring: stop the page
loading, but also making the browser horribly sluggish
... e.g. a popular Norway web site with a 1.5 MB homepage

<scribe> ACTION: Kai to push forward with finding a replacement for the inputmode test [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2008/12/16-mwts-minutes.html#action07] [DONE]
Kai: wrote a blog entry on this - don't intend to put more thoughts for the time being :)
<scribe> ACTION: Wilhelm to review Kai's new blog entry [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/02/03-mwts-minutes.html#action12]
<scribe> ACTION: Wilhelm to look into replacement for inputmode test [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/06-mwts-minutes.html#action05] [PENDING]
Wilhelm: have ideas, but haven't had the time to implement them
<dom_scribe> canvas test and todata: URL usage
Kai: don't know too much about
todata: URL - I know it's in the HTML5 spec
... there seems to be security problems with it
... not sure why opera is the only one that seems to do it
properly
Wilhelm: not sure what the
security implications are
... the goal is to allow for 'saving' what gets drawn through
canvas
<wilhelm> http://annevankesteren.nl/2006/08-paintr21
Dom: do we really need it for that test?
wilhelm: depends on what we want
to test
... if we only want to test the drawing aspect, we probably
don't need it
Dom: I would suggest we should stick to simple canvas, without todata: - not too sure how well it is specified anyway
RESOLUTION: remove todata: url from the canvas test
<scribe> ACTION: Kai to modify the canvas test to not rely on the todata: url scheme [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/02/03-mwts-minutes.html#action14]
Wilhelm: feel free to ping me if you need help
<scribe> ACTION: Kai to prepare a blog post [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/01/27-mwts-minutes.html#action17] [DONE]
Wilhelm: Any suggestion for the
next topic?
... Maybe a post on the guidelines document?
Kai: sounds good
<scribe> ACTION: Kai to draft a post on the guidelines document [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2009/02/03-mwts-minutes.html#action16]
