Business case for web accessibility

<http://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/Drafts/bcase/Overview.html>

shadi: clarification on spelling of ageing (UK) and aging(US) have reverted to ageing

Michael: non profit Web sites
... need to include these - legislation in some countries may require accessibility if government funded
... e.g. Austria

Michael: improvements to site leads to more traffic - 10, 20 or even 50% after relaunch
... mostly anecdotal- there are multiple changes that take place, but will always ask

shadi: need for a research project to collect this data

michael: there is some work going on - but small project
... will try and talk about this at meeting to night in Vienna

andrew: this would be good to see more conclusive studies of business benefits

Michael: referred to Legal and General.... and also Tesco

william: wants to know more about contradictory evidence about possibility of excess consumption of band width or server load

Andrew: section about how to use document
... review of examples

<scribe> ACTION: michael to develop e-commerce web shop example [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2008/10/15-waiage-minutes.html#action01]

suzette: have also done a small study of small business online

william: could combine SME with corporation?
... small ebay businesses

andrew: set up separate section for SME, e-businesses

<andrew> http://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/Drafts/bcase/soc.html#groups

andrew: access older people in social factors document

suzette: query on social factors of usage by older people

william: will issues of lower take up remain for much longer?

suzette: wonder about 'new and infrequent' users and using 'older technology' expanding mention of older users

Andrew: difference in different countries e.g. spain
... higher uptake in US, Australia and UK

william: but equally older people do not consider themselves disabled either

andrew: minor change on technical factors
... financial factors

william: cost of settling legal costs out of court e.g. Target - may be greater than cost of improvements

Jack: retaining staff - may not have time to comment on this further
... what is there looks good

William: governments raising age of retirement - this needs to be included

Andrew: legal and policy factors

suzette: have you considered any info from the MEAC study re legislation?

andrew: asking for confirmation to send on to EO

RESOLUTION:
... agreed to forward to EO

Before and after Demo

Shadi: thanks for comments - the presentation of the demo (look and feel) different from WAI pages
... this needs to be distinct that it is a demo and an active page
... could offer an in between page - the bad, the good but also reveals where the issues are

suzette: [refers to email re displaying icons with issues]

michael: could use a light box to reveal the problem

Shadi: role of WAI-AGE to redefine the requirements and what changes are needed

<andrew> http://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/2005/Demo/report/

Shadi: made the case to work on the evaluation report to help improve communication between evaluators and developers

<shadi> http://www.w3.org/WAI/WAI-AGE/comparative.html

Shadi: the report needs more time to review so move on to comparative doc
... need to select which of these could be put forward to the demo
... homework for all, to select which of these criteria are most important to older people
... criteria for selection - requirements that don't change the look and feel of the Web site and to avoid myth of making Web site boring
... other criteria to have an ah-ha effect - to show the added value, e.g. breadcrumbs which help all users
... also priority level in WCAG - mostly the highest priority but also add reading level

suzette: possible refer to work by Sri K

Shadi: these issues were identified from the lit review
... any other comments

Andrew: work by Sri K was included in this list

Shadi: asking for group to send their favorite or most important requirements within the next week

<andrew> ACTION: all to send favourite requirements to list by 24/Oct [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2008/10/15-waiage-minutes.html#action02]
