Tooltips

JA: Tooltips are system controlled?
... In Windows and Mac...
... Could they do something on their own?
... There are Javascript tooltip libraries etc.

JR: How on Linux (Gnome, etc.)

PP: Prob system calls

<AllanJ> JR: some applications use system calls, easy and standard.

<AllanJ> ...odd that we are asking UA to not use system calls

JA: Problem is that if browser changes system settings they will be changed for all system.

<AllanJ> JR: UA could provide interface to OS tooltips, user would have to understand that it would change for the OS

JR: Maybe it's ok to change global settings as long as user is warned

PP: Can see the mindset for a global setting

JR: Prob seems to be that it's hidden at least in WinXP
... And maybe UAAG just needs to make it easier
... Maybe there are some other system things

JA: Like font size in chrome of app, etc?
... But again impacts every application
... Tooltips maybe more important because displays authored content

<AllanJ> JR: other chrome display meta info <title> is controlled by the OS

JR: Thinks chrome should be system controlled

<scribe> ACTION: JA to Will write a formal checkpoint proposal around tooltips. [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2007/08/30-ua-minutes.html#action01]

<scribe> ACTION: JR to Write something up regarding other potential system services impacting display/control [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2007/08/30-ua-minutes.html#action02]

JA: Last week Cathy was talking about richer tooltips

PP: Thankfully not whole forms in many of the tooltips yet

JA: Concerned about time limits etc to interact.

PP: Behaviours often diff from regular tooltips - e.g. stay popped up, require click

JA: Which brings up another system call thing...
... Warning boxes

PP: Which is why people are building their own custom controls
... What's interesting is that only some portion of page updates

JA: XForms should solve some of that?

PP: Not sure

JA: Next meeting Sept. 6
