Convergence: Research projects targeting semantic interoperability for Clinical Research & Patient Safety

A major barrier to repurposing routinely collected data for clinical research & patient safety is the heterogeneity of healthcare information systems. In addition to the heterogeneity of healthcare information systems, both domains--patient care and clinical research--use different schemas and terminology systems. The collective international efforts of multiple organizations (such as ISO, HL7, CDISC, IHE etc) currently focuses on defining the various standards required to achieve computable semantic interoperability and bridge the gap between clinical research, pharmacoviligence and patient care. Aiming towards semantic interoperability for clinical research and patient safety, a number of research projects are building various semantic resources and also implementing services targeting different uses-cases.
