Submission request to W3C (W3C Team Comment)
We, W3C Members Opera Software ASA and Mozilla Foundation hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification, comprising the following document(s) attached hereto:
...which collectively are referred to as "the Submission". We request the Submission be known as the Web Forms 2.0 Submission.
This specification defines Web Forms 2.0, a backwards compatible extension to the forms features found in HTML 4.01's Forms chapter and the corresponding DOM 2 HTML interfaces. Web Forms 2.0 applies to both HTML and XHTML user agents. It provides new strongly-typed input fields, new attributes for defining constraints, a repeating model for declarative repeating of form sections, new DOM interfaces, new DOM events for validation and dependency tracking, and XML submission and initialization of forms. It also standardises and codifies existing practice in areas that have not been previously documented, and clarifies some of the interactions of HTML form controls and CSS.
HTML4, XHTML1.1, and the DOM are thus extended in a manner that has a clear migration path from existing HTML forms, leveraging the knowledge authors have built up with their experience with HTML so far.
This work is the direct result of discussion on the WHATWG public mailing list.
Opera and Mozilla hereby grant to the W3C, a perpetual, nonexclusive, royalty-free, world-wide right and license under any Opera and Mozilla copyrights in this contribution to copy, publish and distribute the contribution under the W3C document licenses.
Additionally, should the Submission be used as a contribution towards a W3C Activity, Opera and Mozilla grant a right and license of the same scope to any derivative works prepared by the W3C and based on, or incorporating all or part of, the contribution. Opera and Mozilla further agrees that any derivative works of this contribution prepared by the W3C shall be solely owned by the W3C.
If the Submission does not form the basis for future work by W3C, change control of WebForms 2.0 shall remain with the Submitters.
Opera and Mozilla agree that the trade and service marks that are associated with and identify this specific Submission (Web Forms 2.0) will be governed by the W3C Trademark and Servicemark License.
Opera and Mozilla agree to offer licenses according to the W3C Royalty-Free licensing requirements described in section 5 of the 5 February 2004 W3C Patent Policy for any portion of the Submission that is subsequently incorporated in a W3C Recommendation.
We suggest that the Consortium publish the submission as a Note. Further, we suggest that the Consortium use this work as the basis for an update to the HTML4 and XHTML1 specifications.
To help with this work, Opera expects to be able to provide one non-resident document editor to the Consortium.
Technical inquiries about this Submission should be directed to the editor or to the mailing list through which the work was created. Other inquiries should be sent to the undersigned.
