History/KHTML

In March of 1999, Lars Knoll announced that he had checked in what amounted to a complete rewrite of the KHTML library -- changing KHTML to use the standard W3C DOM as its internal document representation. That in turn allowed Javascript support to be added a couple months later -- with the integration of Harri Porten's KJS Javascript code. Then, between January and March of 2000, Lars did further work with Antti Koivisto and Dirk Mueller to add CSS support and to refine and stabilize the KHTML architecture, building KHTML into a complete Web engine of the same class as Mozilla's Gecko engine and Microsoft's Trident engine -- in particular, an engine capable of handling Web applications (not just Web documents) -- and enabling KHTML to form the basis for Webkit (and thus Safari, the Apple iPhone browser, the Nokia S60 browser, and all other Webkit-based browsers).
