Recent research finds that obsoleting longdesc specifically breaks backwards compatibility for over 150 sites in the wild that are using it to describe images. Both authors and users have expectations that longdesc will continue to support existing content.
The longdesc attribute is in current use on company, organizational, governmental, educational, and personal sites throughout the world, including but not limited to:
