Related notes:

The actual issue is not whether or not pingback should be valid, but whether it needs to be mentioned in the HTML spec given that it's in the registry.

In http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=12224#c5, Ian Hickson writes:

"IMHO, we should to a state where the registry is just used to avoid name clashes in development, and once a feature is proved we should move it to the spec. I haven't set that up yet, but that's where I'm headed."

This implies that the spec will need continuous changes while new relations are defined, which is unlikely what the WG wanted when it decided on a registry mechanism.
