DESCRIPTION:https://www.w3.org/events/meetings/96fd35c2-219d-4986-ba08-cc0d
e0871744/\n\nPrefetching can significantly improve web performance by load
ing resources before a user navigates to them\, but doing so across differ
ent origins or sites can harm user privacy. Directly prefetching from a th
ird-party server can leak a user's IP address and browsing context. \n\nTh
e Prefetch spec states a need for IP anonymization and handwaves over how
 it’s achieved\, leaving it implementation-defined [[1](https://wicg.gith
 ub.io/nav-speculation/prefetch.html#create-navigation-params-by-fetching)]
. Let’s look at a couple proposals of how this works in the browser\, wi
 th a browser-provided proxy [[2](https://developer.chrome.com/blog/private
 -prefetch-proxy)] and a proposal for website-provided proxies [[3](https:/
 /github.com/WICG/nav-speculation/issues/368)].\n\nFinally\, we will discus
s the path to enable private cross-origin/site prefetch across browsers. O
pen discussion of privacy and security goals\, threat models\, and future
 work in implementation and standardization.\n\n**Goal(s):**\nDiscussion\n\
