{"id":6,"date":"2015-12-10T17:16:34","date_gmt":"2015-12-10T17:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/tourismdata\/?p=6"},"modified":"2015-12-10T17:16:34","modified_gmt":"2015-12-10T17:16:34","slug":"welcome-and-background","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/tourismdata\/2015\/12\/10\/welcome-and-background\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome and Background"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Felipe Santi and I welcome you to the <em>Tourism Structured Web Data Community Group<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This group was set up in response to a thread, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/public-schemaorg\/2015Nov\/0014.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tourism Schema<\/a><\/em>, that Felipe started on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schemaorg\/\">Schema.org Community Group<\/a> mailing list.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are a small company of consultants in the tourism industry focused on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">helping tourist destinations and services to market themselves.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">For that purpose we have recently built a web platform <\/span><span class=\"s1\">&lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inventrip.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/www.inventrip.com<\/span><\/a>&gt;, which makes heavy use of tourism categories <\/span><span class=\"s1\">to describe places the tourists can visit or things they can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We would like to migrate the existing categories in our platform to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">schema.org classes, however that would require extending classes (e.g. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">TouristAttraction) to cover up more detailed use cases frequent in the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">tourism industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">It was clear from the following messages that there was interest in discussing enhancement and possible extension to the Schema.org vocabulary to help with the structured markup of tourism related information. \u00a0Also there was interest in sharing best practice in the ways to this. \u00a0Hence this group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tourism covers broad areas of markup interest, from locations and transport to hotels and disability access etc. \u00a0Schema.org is also very broad. \u00a0So it is hoped that much of what is required is already available, or being proposed &#8211; there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/schemaorg\/schemaorg\/pull\/916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hotels extension already in the proposal<\/a> stage. The enhancements needed may well be minimal, and much of the work of this group will be around \u00a0identifying use cases and capturing best practice to satisfy them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We will have a wiki soon to capture such work in. \u00a0In the meantime, please don&#8217;t hold back with suggestions, and potential use cases for us to engage with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Richard Wallis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Felipe Santi and I welcome you to the Tourism Structured Web Data Community Group.
