{"id":2,"date":"2013-04-04T01:26:09","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T01:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/sustyweb\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2022-03-10T16:23:52","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T16:23:52","slug":"frameworks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/sustyweb\/frameworks\/","title":{"rendered":"Frameworks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many other frameworks describing sustainable products, services, and workflows in other areas of design, a few of which are listed here:<\/p>\n<p>However, there are many useful ideas in the following frameworks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"reduce, reuse, and recycle\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waste_hierarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The 3Rs<\/a><a title=\"classifies waste management strategies according to their importance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waste_hierarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">&nbsp;<\/a>(Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\" strategic tool for businesses and organizations to \u201cdrive sustainability into the DNA of their corporate structures and functions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.design-sustainability.com\/index.php\/resources\/frameworks\/the-sustainability-helix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sustainability Helix<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"moves beyond the traditional goal of reducing the negative impacts of commerce (\u2018eco-efficiency\u2019), to a new paradigm of increasing its positive impacts (\u2018eco-effectiveness\u2019)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mbdc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cradle2Cradle<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"design which follows nature as the original sustainable system\" href=\"http:\/\/biomimicry.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Biomimicry<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"sustainability in design on a energy-sucking website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livingprinciples.org\/framework\/roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Living Principles<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jedlicka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wendy Jedlicka\u2019s Books<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablegraphicdesign.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sustainable Graphic Design<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/packagingsustainability.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sustainable Packaging<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One goal of the Sustainable Web Design Group is to adapt useful features from these frameworks into a sustainability framework specific to the web.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a possible breakdown of sustainable principles for the web, game and interactive world, adapted from the list developed by <a title=\"experience design and sustainable design\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nathan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nathan Shredoff<\/a>&nbsp;in his book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004VFUP5K\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&amp;btkr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Design is the Problem: The Future of Design Must Be Sustainable<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>General Sustainability Principle<\/th>\n<th>Sustainable Web Design Goals<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Make meaningful products<\/td>\n<td>Make websites that are have real value, not fashion or tech-tricks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Easy design rollback<\/td>\n<td>Iterative or Agile design workflow<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Source Renewable Materials<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;Switch to a \u201cGreen\u201d webhost<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Design products to work in the future<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;Implement classic design strategies<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Design with the user in mind<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;Create effective User Experience (UX)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ensure democratic access<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;Build accessible, responsive websites<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Interchangable Parts<\/td>\n<td>Apply standards-based design<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Minimize energy and resource consumption<\/td>\n<td>Web Performance Optimization (WPO)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Don\u2019t corrupt the virtual system<\/td>\n<td>&nbsp;Search Engine Optimization (SEO)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Another possible formulation<\/strong> for sustainable web design comes from the <a title=\"permaculture theory for sustainability\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zones_(Permaculture)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Permaculture movement<\/a>.
