{"id":13,"date":"2016-09-15T12:18:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T12:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/?p=13"},"modified":"2016-09-15T12:18:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T12:18:12","slug":"progress-update-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/2016\/09\/15\/progress-update-september\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress update, September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the end of summer (at least where I am sat that seems very much the case) and there is some good progress to report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What aspects of a course can we now describe?<\/strong><br \/>\nAs a result of work so far addressing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Outline_use_cases\">use cases that we outlined<\/a>, we now have answers to the following questions about how to describe courses using schema.org:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>How to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Modelling_Course_and_CourseOffering\">define something as being about a course or being about an instance of that course<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to mark up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Identifying_courses_by_provider_and_code\">identifier used by providers to identify their courses<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Identifying_courses_by_provider_and_name\">identify a course by provider and name<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to mark up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Subject_of_Course\">subject of a course<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to identify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Location_of_a_course\">location where a course is offered<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to identify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Start_and_end_of_Course\">start and end of an instance of a course<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Identifying_when_course_events_happen\">times of events that are part of it<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Related to start and end dates of a course, how to specify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/The_typical_learning_time_or_duration_of_the_course\">duration and amount of time typically required to complete a course<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to identify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Organizations_providing_and_offering_course\">organizations providing and offering courses<\/a> (and how these two roles may differ).<\/li>\n<li>How to identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Instructor_of_a_course_instance\">the teacher \/ instructor of a course<\/a> (who may or nay not be the creator of the course).<\/li>\n<li>How to mark up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/schema-course-extend\/wiki\/Mode_of_study_or_delivery#Proposal\">mode of study or delivery<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>How to identify a course which is a prerequisite of the course being described\u00a0or to link to or\u00a0describe other prerequisites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As with anything in schema.org, many of the answers proposed are not the final word on all the detail required in every case, but they form a solid basis that I think will be adequate in many instances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What new properties are we proposing?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn short, remarkably few. Many of the aspects of a course can be described in the same way as for other creative works or events. However we did find that we needed to create two new types <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/Course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Course<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/CourseInstance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CourseInstance<\/a> to identify whether the description related to a course that could be offered at various times or a specific offering or section of that course. We also found the need for three new properties for\u00a0Course: <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/courseCode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">courseCode<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/coursePrerequisites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">coursePrerequisites<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/hasCourseInstance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hasCourseInstance<\/a>; and two new properties for\u00a0CourseInstance: <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/courseMode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">courseMode<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/webschemas.org\/instructor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">instructor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are others under discussion, but I highlight these as proposed because they are <strong>being put forward for inclusion in the next release of the schema.org<\/strong> core vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 200px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/images\/search-gallery-courses.png\" alt=\"showing how Google will display information about courses in a search gallery\" style=\"float: right\" \/><strong>More good news:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/search-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google search gallery<\/a>\u00a0documentation for developers already\u00a0includes information on how to provide the most basic info\u00a0about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/search-gallery#courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Courses<\/a>.
