{"id":220,"date":"2013-02-28T13:57:49","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T13:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/?p=220"},"modified":"2013-02-28T13:57:49","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T13:57:49","slug":"read-write-web-monthly-open-thread-february-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/2013\/02\/28\/read-write-web-monthly-open-thread-february-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Read Write Web \u2014 Monthly Open Thread \u2014 (February 2013)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Summary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Realtime communications were in play this month, with some impressive demos of <a href=\"https:\/\/hacks.mozilla.org\/2013\/02\/hello-chrome-its-firefox-calling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">firefox<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2013\/02\/hello-firefox-this-is-chrome-calling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">chrome<\/a> talking to each other, using the W3C WebRTC protocol.\u00a0 For those wishing to try it out, some of this functionality has been abstracted in a developer friendly API, called <a href=\"http:\/\/peerjs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">PeerJS<\/a>.\u00a0 On the social front, Google have also announced a <a href=\"http:\/\/googleplusplatform.blogspot.com\/2013\/02\/google-plus-sign-in.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">sign-in<\/a> process for their social application platform, Google+.<\/p>\n<p>The Linked Data cloud, got that much bigger, as statistics from the <a href=\"http:\/\/oecd.270a.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">OECD<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bfs.270a.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Swiss Federal Statistics Office<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/fao.270a.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">UN Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a> joined the LOD cloud.\u00a0 Kudos to Sarven Capadisli for making this happen, you can read the write up <a href=\"http:\/\/csarven.ca\/linked-sdmx-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lots going on in the RWW, the highlight of which was probably the release of the Drupal WebID <a href=\"http:\/\/drupal.org\/project\/webid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">integration<\/a> by St\u00e9phane Corlosquet.\u00a0 Account recovery and pairing were also fleshed out on the mailing list, this month, with some more demos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/wiki\/images\/f\/fe\/Rww-logo-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Communications and Outreach<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/webappstore\/\">Web Application Store CG<\/a>, three sets of manifests are in the process of being compared: W3C Widgets, the Chrome app store and Mozilla marketplace.\u00a0 There has been talk of standardization which would be invaluable in delivering read write apps to the web.<\/p>\n<p>Mozilla have <a href=\"https:\/\/hacks.mozilla.org\/2013\/02\/building-a-paid-app-for-firefox-os\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> a system of payments for their marketplace, and for firefox OS.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/webpayments\/\">W3C Payments CG<\/a>, there has been some discussion with Kumar McMillan, of Mozilla, on issues such as security and linked data integration. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Apps\/WebApplicationReceipt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">receipt protocol<\/a> looks promising, and could perhaps be used in conjunction with the linked data apps to provide payments.<\/p>\n<p><a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/files\/2012\/06\/rdf.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"109\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Community Group<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This month in the community group there have been some great demos.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/public-rww\/2013Feb\/0000.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">first<\/a> demonstrates conditional access to DropBox, SkyDrive, GoogleDrive, Box.net and Amazon S3.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/public-rww\/2013Feb\/0005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Another<\/a> shows multi protocol login to MediaWiki.<\/p>\n<p>We have discussed two long standing problems and found some solutions.\u00a0 One is account recovery and the other is pairing of devices.\u00a0 Andrei has <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/public-rww\/2013Feb\/0008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">explained<\/a> how both of these can be solved, with a full implementation in <a href=\"https:\/\/my-profile.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my-profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/files\/2013\/02\/drupal.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-223\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/files\/2013\/02\/drupal.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Applications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As previously mentioned, St\u00e9phane Corlosquet, has <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/public-webid\/2013Feb\/0061.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> his Drupal integration of WebID.\u00a0 While Drupal 7 already has semantic elements, this can potentially help bring user centric linked data to a large portion of the Web.\u00a0 There is a working demo <a href=\"http:\/\/webid.openspring.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those living on the bleeding edge, it&#8217;s now possible to experience realtime updates over turtle using tabulator, data.fm and curl.\u00a0 Currently in production, the &#8220;updates via&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/linkeddata\/data.fm\/tree\/updatesVia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">branch<\/a> of data.fm provides support for (secure) websockets.\u00a0 This is best tested in the Chrome browser, navigate to, say, <a href=\"http:\/\/chat.data.fm\/dig#test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/chat.data.fm\/dig#test<\/a>.\u00a0 Then try to modify this file either by hand, from the UI or using curl ( curl -H &#8220;Content-Type: text\/turtle&#8221; -X PUT -T dig http:\/\/chat.data.fm\/ where .\/dig is the turtle file) and watch the text update in realtime!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/files\/2013\/02\/freedombox.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-224\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/rww\/files\/2013\/02\/freedombox.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Last but not least\u2026<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For those following the <a href=\"http:\/\/freedomboxfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FreedomBox<\/a> project it has reached the first milestone of the software stack with version 0.1 being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomboxfoundation.org\/news\/FreedomBox_version_0.1_Released\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">released<\/a>.\u00a0 FreedomBox aims to be a free software distributed system that allows you to keep all your logs and social data in the safety of your on home.\u00a0 Congrats on reaching version 0.1, looking forward to future releases!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary Realtime communications were in play this month, with some impressive demos of firefox and chrome talking to each other, using the W3C WebRTC protocol.\u00a0 For those wishing to try it out, some of this functionality has been abstracted in &hellip;
