{"id":14,"date":"2026-06-16T12:18:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T12:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/portableweb\/?p=14"},"modified":"2026-06-16T12:18:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T12:18:52","slug":"portableweb-community-group-status-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/portableweb\/2026\/06\/16\/portableweb-community-group-status-update\/","title":{"rendered":"PortableWeb Community Group: Status Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Portable Web Content Format Community Group has defined the initial scope of work for the <code>.pweb<\/code> format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main goals within the Community Group scope are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Container and packaging format<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>current focus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manifest schema for capability and permission declaration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viewer conformance requirements and security sandboxing model<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Per-bundle isolated storage model for local state persistence and portability across viewers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permission-gated inter-bundle communication over Bluetooth, WiFi Direct, or local network for offline peer-to-peer and collaborative experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viewer conformance test suite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-normative implementation guide for content creators, AI tools, and viewer developers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We are currently working on the first goal: <strong>the container and packaging format<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This phase focuses on defining the basic <code>.pweb<\/code> package structure, manifest and entry point discovery, and consistent loading behavior across viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the Community Group specification work, the broader PortableWeb effort also aims to explore viewer implementations for major platforms, helping validate the format in real environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the packaging foundation is stable, the group can move toward permissions, security, storage, inter-bundle communication, conformance testing, and implementation guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback and participation are welcome as we build PortableWeb step by step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of this process, we will also consider early community feedback and use cases, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starter themes and authoring templates \u2014 exploring reusable <code>.pweb<\/code> styling templates for documents, slides, apps, reports, and educational content, instead of relying on uncontrolled external style inheritance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional package metadata \u2014 considering metadata files such as JSON-LD, RDF, or Turtle for indexing, discovery, learning object metadata, attribution, and AI-assisted retrieval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrity and authenticity<\/strong> \u2014 considering future mechanisms for verifying <code>.pweb<\/code> resources, including possible digital signing or integrity metadata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These inputs will help guide the packaging work and identify areas that may need to be addressed in future layers of the specification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Portable Web Content Format Community Group has defined the initial scope of work for the .pweb format.
