Over the next week, I will publish a number of post to address some of those misconceptions (hopefully setting the record straight):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/native-web-apps\/2011\/10\/10\/misconception-widgets-reinvent-the-wheel\/\">Misconception: Widgets reinvent the wheel<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/native-web-apps\/2011\/10\/11\/misconception-json-is-easier-than-xml\/\">Misconception: JSON is easier than XML<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/native-web-apps\/2011\/10\/12\/32\/\">Misconception: XML Digital Signatures is too hard to implement<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/native-web-apps\/2011\/10\/13\/misconception-widgets-lack-an-origin\/\">Misconception: Widgets lack an origin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/native-web-apps\/2011\/10\/13\/misconception-widgets-lack-a-security-model\/\">Misconception: Widgets lack a security model<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, the misconceptions continue to be perpetuated at the detriment of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2008\/webapps\/wiki\/WidgetSpecs\">W3C Widget standards<\/a>, while the market continues to fragment as new formats continue to emerge (e.g., Google&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/chrome\/apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">installable\u00a0web apps<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/library\/windows\/apps\/br211386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Windows 8 Metro apps<\/a>) and old formats linger (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/downloads\/dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dashboard Widgets<\/a> in Mac Os Lion).<\/p>\n<p>These posts are based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/marcosc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Misconceptions-about-W3C-Widgets.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">paper<\/a> I wrote for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2011\/web-apps-ws\/\">W3C Workshop on The Future of Off-line Web Applications<\/a>, which is to be held on 5 November, 2011 at Redwood City, CA, USA.
