It was organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agroknow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Agro-Know<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FAO<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egfar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">GFAR<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.big-data-europe.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Big Data Europe<\/a> project and hosted by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (<a href=\"http:\/\/institut.inra.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">INRA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Following an intense <a href=\"https:\/\/rd-alliance.org\/group\/agriculture-data-ig-igad\/post\/igad-pre-meeting-organizational-information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pre-meeting of the Research Data Alliance Agricultural Data Interest Group<\/a>, the organizers gathered more than 40 experts from around the world to discuss needs and requirements in terms of big data in the food and agriculture sector.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, what came out of the discussions was that\u00a0<em>the special thing about big data in agriculture is\u00a0its extreme variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is what you get, if you contrast the four (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibmbigdatahub.com\/infographic\/four-vs-big-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">as IBM suggests<\/a>) V\u2019s of big data to the data types and sources that are typically used in agricultural, food and environmental research. We are not talking about an extremely large Volume; other domains have much more voluminous data. It is not that they come with a high Velocity, especially compared to other domains. In many cases, their Veracity is quite high. But in agriculture,\u00a0<em>data Variety matters<\/em>: you need to combine multiple, heterogeneous data types and formats from several sources, trying to solve the information problems and support decision making of the relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/y5G4Tf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1510 size-medium\" style=\"float: left;margin: 12px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.big-data-europe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/21056500104_e23630c2a6_z-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Pascal Neveu's presentation. From the BDE Flickr channel\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This was the main message that came out of the fully packed workshop, with over 40 participants that use a large variety of data sources, types and applications \u2013 ranging from germplasm passport descriptors to animal disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Our speakers were representing some world-class research institutions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The workshop opened with\u00a0<strong>Pascal Neuveu<\/strong>, senior research engineer at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inra.fr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">French National Agronomic Institute (INRA)<\/a>\u00a0and director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www6.montpellier.inra.fr\/mistea_eng\/Presentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">MISTEA Laboratory<\/a>. Pascal gave us the big data perspective and implementation challenges that such a large and distributed agronomic research organisation has \u2013 did you know that INRA has 18 different centers spread across over 40 geographical locations, and more than 10,000 people from which about 4,000 are researchers? Pascal also presented a specific case study, the one of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1369526615000266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">high throughput phenotyping<\/a> at 5 large, open-air experimental fields, 2 greenhouses with controlled environments, and 2 fully equipped laboratories for carrying different types of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>omics<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>analyses. Lots and lots of data generated and managed, but the main challenge that he identified is the\u00a0extreme variety of this data.<br \/>\nSee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/BigData_Europe\/inras-big-data-perspectives-and-implementation-challenges-53148578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pascal Neveu&#8217;s presentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch were also there, with two of the most prestigious\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wageningenur.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wageningen UR<\/a>\u00a0institutes presenting their views and needs in terms of big data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tim Verhaart\u00a0<\/strong>from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wageningenur.nl\/en\/Expertise-Services\/Research-Institutes\/lei.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">socio-economic research institute of LEI<\/a>\u00a0talked about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/de.slideshare.net\/BigData_Europe\/big-data-opportunities-for-marketing-of-horticultural-products-53151165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Big data opportunities for marketing of horticultural products<\/a>\u201d, introducing a very interesting public-private partnership through which the fruits and flowers industries are calling on big data technology researchers to help them do business better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rob Lokers\u00a0<\/strong>from the inter-disciplinary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wageningenur.nl\/en\/Expertise-Services\/Research-Institutes\/alterra.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">environmental research institute of Alterra<\/a>\u00a0brought forward the amazing complexity of using big data as input for complex agricultural and environmental modelling, which is then generating new (big) data, information, and knowledge that supports research and policy making \u2013 at his talk on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/de.slideshare.net\/BigData_Europe\/big-data-challenges-and-solutions-in-agricultural-and-environmental-research-53151907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Big data challenges and solutions in agricultural and environmental research<\/a>\u201c.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/z3wwQH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1508 size-full\" style=\"float: right;margin: 12px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.big-data-europe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/21688363441_1723200c63_m.jpg\" alt=\"Group discussions. From the BDE Flickr channel\n<p>And there were more people representing our community \u2013 like\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Arnaud<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioversityinternational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bioversity International<\/a>\u00a0giving an excellent insight into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/de.slideshare.net\/BigData_Europe\/big-data-in-cgiar-53151807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the CGIAR Big Data Analytics Platform<\/a>; and\u00a0<strong>Valeria Pesce<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.egfar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR)<\/a>\u00a0who presented where we stand today with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/de.slideshare.net\/BigData_Europe\/a-global-linked-and-open-data-infrastructure-for-agricultural-development-53151962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a global linked and open data infrastructure for agricultural development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the workshop came one of the most provoking interventions from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/stefanobertolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Stefano Bertolo<\/a>\u00a0of the European Commission: \u201c<em>I have an open question to share:\u00a0is there some European company that will surprise us by disrupting the agricultural industry and help it make a competitive breakthrough using big data?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, an extremely interesting event that initiated the dialogue in Europe about how big data will change agricultural research and put in place a framework for a more coordinated effort.
