{"id":12,"date":"2017-01-11T16:34:46","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T16:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/accesslearn\/?p=12"},"modified":"2017-01-11T16:34:46","modified_gmt":"2017-01-11T16:34:46","slug":"accesslearn-update-january-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/accesslearn\/2017\/01\/11\/accesslearn-update-january-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"AccessLearn update, January 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Happy New Year! \u00a0The Accessible Online Learning (AccessLearn) Community Group co-chairs, Mary and Dave, would like to start the new year with a review of the work our group has conducted to date \u2014 and a proposal for next steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since starting in the Spring of 2015, AccessLearn has conducted the following work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>A call for participation,<\/b>\u00a0resulting in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/accesslearn\/participants\"><span class=\"s2\">86 participants<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Two Surveys:<\/b>\u00a0An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/community\/accesslearn\/wiki\/Initial_AccessLearn_Survey\"><span class=\"s2\">Initial AccessLearn Survey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0identified topics and key challenges (technical, organisational, other) in creating accessible online learning experiences. A subsequent survey identified two work streams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Workstream 1:<\/b>\u00a0Began an analysis of existing WAI documents and a list to identify what exists, what needs additional information, and what is lacking in guidance or resources focused on\u00a0accessibility and online learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Workstream 2:\u00a0<\/b>Formed a 21 item list of accessibility information gaps that exist in the\u00a0online learning community\u00a0and associated stakeholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While neither workstream was fully completed, we\u00a0propose bringing the work streams back together for the entire group to move forward. We have gathered detail from 2 documents that came out of each workstream to form a combined spreadsheet mapping\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>W3C Resources and Gaps Related to Online Learning.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our next work as a group will be to build out this document so that we have as complete a list as possible of W3C accessibility web pages and a mapping to the accessible online learning information gaps we&#8217;d previously identified. We&#8217;ll classify each information gap using one of the following categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Information is not present on the WAI web site<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Information is hard to find<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Information is hard to apply to online learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Information is hard to find and hard to apply<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The purpose of this work is to establish what needs to happen next to address each information gaps and to ensure that WAI can best serve the accessibility knowledge needs of people working in online learning. We&#8217;ll be working closely with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/EO\/\">Education and Outreach Working Group (EOWG)<\/a> in this effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We&#8217;ve provided more details of the upcoming work, including a link to the document, in an email that was sent to list members.
