The Protocols and Formats Working Group is no longer chartered to operate. Its work will continue in two new Working Groups:

  • https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/ Accessible Platform Architectures, to review specifications, develop technical support materials, collaborate with other Working Groups on technology accessibility, and coordinate harmonized accessibility strategies within W3C; and
  • https://www.w3.org/WAI/ARIA/ Accessible Rich Internet Applications, to continue development of the Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) suite of technologies and other technical specifications when needed to bridge known gaps.

Resources from the PFWG remain available to support long-term institutional memory, but this information is of historical value only.

This Wiki page was edited by participants of the Protocols and Formats Working Group. It does not necessarily represent consensus and it may have incorrect information or information that is not supported by other Working Group participants, WAI, or W3C. It may also have some very useful information.

Additional Roles for the Role Module

Default Roles Needed

form
currently, the closest concept is the XHTML role "search". However, not all forms are search forms. It is imperative that users be able to not only quickly access the search function in a document, it is equally imperative that users have a means of sorting and organizing forms, especially hybrid forms.
example of hybrid form, the MediaWiki content management form.
refnote
currently, there is a single, generic means of designating a "note", which indicates the content is parenthetic or ancillary to the main content of the resource. The note role, therefore, could be used to denote insertions into quoted text or stage directions within dialogue, if 2 additional default roles are added: refnote, which designates a referential note, which provides information directly related to the main text, and;
annote
designates an anotative note -- that is, information about the source of a section of text.

Examples

Example 1: the disambiguation of an individual who is referred to in the original Q by pronouns using SPAN with the "role" of note

  <p>According to Foote, <q>By the time he <span role="note"
  >[J.E.B. Stuart]</span> reached Lee's headquarters at Gettysburg, the
  tide of battle had turned against the Confederates, due in no small
  part to his <span role="note">[Stuart's]</span> failure to
  provide Lee with intelligence as to the disposition and movements of
  Federal troops the entire first two days of the three-day battle.</q>
  </p>

Editorial Changes

Currently, the definition of the default roles in the XHTML Role Module contained in Section 3.1 of the Vocabulary Document, contains a repetition of the term being defined. Since the two other definition lists do not use the term being defined as the first word in the definition, the following is an attempt to "harmonize" the definitions.

contains the prime heading or internal title of a page.
complementary
indicates that the section supports but is separable from the main content of resource.
contentinfo
contains meta information about the content on the page or the page as a whole.
definition
indicates the definition of a term or concept.
main
acts as the main content of the document.
navigation
indicates a collection of items suitable for navigating the document or related documents.
note
indicates the content is parenthetic or ancillary to the main content of the resource.
search
indicates that the section provides a search facility.
