Relate the issue to the personal experience of the reader/viewer, as most will have encountered a situation of illegible text. Use different examples to illustrate the variety of people impacted by text customization. Refer to mobile apps and content formats, which often pose specific challenges regarding text customization. Emphasize that text customization is good practice in addition to an accessibility requirement.

Sequence Time Elapsed Time Narration Visuals Audio Description
0:04 0:04 In every area of life text plays a vital role – without it we’d often be lost. Person in a cafe desperately trying to find the toilet – there’s a sign on the wall that says ‘ladies’ (with arrow to one side), ‘gents’ (with arrow to the other)
0:02 0:06 But it can be a struggle if eyesight problems mean the text is too small The sign looks the same but the text is now miniscule, they get closer and closer and find the sign says ‘Kitchen’
0:02 0:08 Or if the layout makes it difficult, for example for people with dyslexia The sign is the same but the letters all jumbled
0:07 0:15 We don’t all see things the same way –but it’s something we can address. The first person goes to the toilet, the other two do not
0:06 0:21 Well designed websites and applications allow the text to be customized, for example to change its size, spacing, and colors The person who saw the text jumbled replaces the sign with one with a different colour scheme – they read it clearly
0:05 0:26 Meaning that people with visual disabilities and dyslexia can use them The person who saw the text as tiny replaces the sign with a large text version – they read it clearly
0:08 0:34 Good design allows anyone to resize or recolor text without loss of formatting function or clarity. <<<These words now appear on the screen of a tablet being used by someone in the cafe
0:08 0:42 Proper coding makes the content fully customisable. Visit w3.org/WAI for more tips and information Show all three lavatory signs one on top of the other, the three desperate people all walk back out past them, happy and smiling
