Embedded OpenType (.EOT) Font Format Submission Request to W3C

We, W3C Member:

hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification, comprising the following documents attached hereto:
  1. Embedded OpenType (.EOT) Font Format
  2. MicroType® Express Font Format Specification Version 1.2

Monotype Imaging hereby contributes "MicroType® Express Font Format Specification Version 1.2" to this Submission; see the relevant IPR statements below.

Abstract

The Embedded Font Format (EOT) was developed by Microsoft to enable OpenType fonts to be linked to web pages for download to render the web page with the font the author desired. This appendix specifies the format of the .EOT file so that User Agents can download, extract and temporarily install fonts of the .EOT file suffix that are included in the @font-face definition of a CSS style sheet. Example pages can be found at the Microsoft Typography site on Font Embedding for the Web.

Downloaded fonts are only temporarily installed on the user’s machines for use by the particular web page while the page is actively being used.

Monotype Imaging’s patented MicroType® Express font compression technology for fonts is used within embedded applications. The technology minimizes memory usage for font data storage in resource-constrained environments, where both ROM and RAM savings are critical. Small font files are built without sacrificing the qualities, features and capabilities of OpenType® and TrueType® fonts.

Microsoft Statements

Microsoft hereby grants to the W3C a perpetual, nonexclusive, royalty-free, world-wide right and license under any Microsoft copyrights on this contribution, to copy, publish and distribute the contribution under the W3C document licenses.

Additionally, should the Submission be used as a contribution towards a W3C Activity, Microsoft grants a right and license of the same scope to any derivative works prepared by the W3C and based on, or incorporating all or part of, the contribution. Microsoft further agrees that any derivative works of this contribution prepared by the W3C shall be solely owned by the W3C.

The organization I represent on the W3C Advisory Committee agrees to offer licenses according to the W3C Royalty-Free licensing requirements described in section 5 of the 5 February 2004 W3C Patent Policy for any portion of the Submission that is subsequently incorporated in a W3C Recommendation.

Required proprietary technology

MicroType® Express algorithm. The MicroType® Express algorithm is a lossless compression algorithm for OpenType/TrueType fonts, which was developed by Monotype Imaging. Monotype Imaging has indicated that they own one or more patents that relate to the MicroType® Express algorithm.

Suggested action

Monotype Imaging would like input from W3C and the community on the best way to achieve W3C’s adoption of the EOT Submission that includes the Monotype MicroType Express compression technology.

We suggest that the Consortium start a Working Group whose mission is to produce a W3C Recommendation for EOT by refining the Submission, addressing implementation experience and interoperability feedback from the Submission.
