ISSUE-19: Multiply an image's intrinsic size

Multiply an image's intrinsic size

State:
CLOSED
Product:
CSS3 Backgrounds and Borders
Raised by:

Opened on:

Description:
People [reference lost] have suggested to allow the size of an image to be specified relative to its intrinsic size, thus 'background-size: 2' would render the image twice as big as it would be rendered by default and 'background-size: 0.5' would scale it down to half its size.

Arguments include rendering at a higher resolution to avoid anti-aliasing and rendering an image both at normal size and at a reduced size in a different element, for a kind of “thumbnail” effect.

The draft currently has a specification for this, which allows 'background-size' to take one or two numbers (the latter to scale horizontally and vertically by different amounts).

The default size (and the only possible size in level 2) is, of course, equivalent to 'background-size: 1'.

Related notes:

GCPM proposes an 'image-resolution' property http://www.w3.org/TR/2007/WD-css3-gcpm-20070504/#image-resolution with similar function. Thus a 'background-image-resolution' may be an alternative.
